I’ll just leave this here in the faint hope that someone inside the British Labour Party will start acting honestly for once because when not if a second spike occurs in infections, they will carry equal blame as the Tories for a hugely reckless act. Health before Profit!
It seems utterly contradictory that the mainstream media on one hand are unanimously anticipating that businesses will only operate at half capacity as many of the public will not be prepared to put themselves at risk so early in this pandemic to pop into pubs or restaurants...👇
Yet here we have politicians from both sides of the HOC telling us it is the right thing and more or less our civic duty to just pop down and spread the love and the higher risk of becoming infected or infecting others just to keep the British tradition of pub going alive??
Boris Johnson said people should remain 2m apart where possible but a "one metre plus" rule would be introduced. He also said the latest decision would be reversible. Sure..alcohol & Pub revellers are in agreement that 1 is better than 2 whether in number of drinks or distance!🤨
What exactly is a ‘one metre plus’ rule anyway? Is it 1.25, 1.5 or 10 metre apart? Such unsurprisingly deliberate vagueness from Johnson shouldn’t shock anyone given his usual mixed messaging that ignores the fact lack of clarity has previously had fatal consequences for others.
You only have to look at the care homes to register that Johnson is not on top of this crisis. Neither is Starmer making sense and here’s the thing! What if after reducing social distancing to 1 metre, pubs and restaurants still go the wall. Will they admit they were wrong?
This is a very likely prospect for many in the current climate of public reluctance to dismiss caution on the word of an untrustworthy PM. So let’s also add many thousands more deaths to the present total if this triggers a second wave. Will Johnson & Starmer then both resign?
This is where we must hold the politicians to account. They too often assume that asking questions is their sum total of the duties of their office admirably discharged. It’s not an easy job but it is a privileged one and the last word on this must always rest with the public!
Democracy is only as good as we make it and both men must be seen to stand over the outcomes of such critical decisions and be accountable not just to the will of parliament but also the will of the people who put them there. Therein lies the answer!
