(1) Sewer Super-Spreading theory takes a look at Deutschland:
(2) Though the National per capita statistics suggest Germany had a similar #COVID19 outbreak to the United States, Germany's recovery is markedly different.

Berlin (3.8M) leads German cities in #COVID19 cases with 7,603, YTD. New York City (8.4M) has 230,000.
(3) Even the similarity between the breakout events is misleading. The United States statistics are basically the Northeast breakout values diluted by the unscathed portions of the country.

Germany's reflect a much more national outbreak impacting two thirds of the nation.
(4) Germany has roughly 10 times the population of New York City's five Boroughs.

New York reported 8,000 cases in a single day. That represents the entire area under the curve for Berlin.

All of Germany's cases reached 190K, YTD, roughly the same as NYC's 230K.
(5) Berlin was devastated toward the end of World War II. Much of its old sewer system was destroyed.

There was a silver lining though. Berlin's redeveloped system is one of the finest in the world.
(6) Today, three fourths (75%) of Berlin's service area has separate Stormwater and Sanitary Sewer Systems.

Only 40% of NYC has separate Sanitary Sewers.
(7) The other Combined Stormwater & Sewer System covers 25% of the Berlin service area and incorporated older systems during the recover. It has massive modern overflow tanks, similar to the approach used in Tokyo, it hold 300,000 m3 of stormwater, when fully complete in 2022.
(8) New York City's Combined Sewer System has problematic Tier 1 Combined Sewer Overflow outfalls throughout the outer Boroughs.

Investments have cleared Manhattan and the west shore of Brooklyn of these foul insults, but at the expense of the outer Boroughs environment.
(9) The location of Combined Sewer Overflow outfalls in New York City has good correspondence with the areas hardest hit by #COVID19. Staten Island is on a different system, but also has problematic outfalls.
(10) This concludes my first look at why Deutschland handled their #COVID19 outbreak 10X better than New York City.

A world leader in ecological technology, it benefited from the rebuilding of its sewer system after WW II. This may have played a major role in its resilience.
