The Yarmouk camp, or as the Palestinians call it the “Capital of the Palestinian Diaspora,” used to house 36% of all Palestinian refugees in Syria. Palestinians considered it a symbol of their hopes for return and attachment to Palestine. [Thread] 1/
It is located seven kilometers south of Damascus, covering an area of about two square kilometres. Formally it comes under the governorate of Damascus, but since the 1960s it had administrative autonomy run by an independent "local committee." 2/
The area was devastated in a brutal siege by the regime forces and incursion by ISIS. And now it is under threat from the regime’s continuing policy of demographic change implemented through laws that strip displaced people of their property. 3/
The latest decree of the Damascus Governorate Council, known as Organizational Plan No. 105 covers Qaboun and Yarmouk areas and envisages demolition and “reorganization” of entire neighborhoods. 4/ facebook.com/37860806553115…
Atta Al-Zeer and Noah Ibrahim streets, the Tala’i Park area and its surrounding area, the Jerusalem Mosque area, Al-Mansoura Street, the Jerusalem Street area, Palestine Mosque and its surroundings, in addition to other large areas, are all included in the plan. 5/
Consistent with the previous policies of the same nature, the regime authorities gave owners of properties in Yarmouk and Qaboun 30 days to file formal objections to the decision. Failure to do so will result in the property’s confiscation. 6/ refugeesps.net/post/14444/%D9…
The call for objections adds insult to injury as the vast majority of owners are displaced persons who have no way of filing the objections, after being forcibly displaced by the regime, with their properties damaged or destroyed. 7/
SACD considers these measures by the Syrian regime, preceded by similar decisions in Harasta and many other areas, as blatant acts of demographic change in a manner consistent with Bashar Al-Assad's vision of a “harmonious society.” 8/ medium.com/@SACD/demoliti…
These decisions deprive the displaced Syrians and the Palestinians of their rights to a safe, voluntary and dignified return, and are outright violations of UN resolutions regarding the safe environment for the return of the displaced. #SyriaConf2020 9/
The Syrian Association for Citizens' Dignity affirms that any action taken by the Syrian regime to confiscate property and land from their rightful owners will not deter us from continuing our struggle for our right to a safe, voluntary and dignified return. 10/
It is precisely these kinds of discriminatory policies, which target Syrian people to affect a lasting demographic change and benefit of the corrupt networks close to the Assad’s regime, that are the reason for #CaesarLaw and other sanctions by the EU and the US. 11/
One of the key preconditions for any sustainable political solution to end the conflict in Syria will have to be based on the rights of the displaced, which include abolishment of discriminatory laws and decree used to strip the displaced people of their property. 12/12
