BREAKING: Investors and shareholders worth a collective $620 billion sent letters to @Nike @FedEx and @PepsiCo asking the brands to divest from the Washington @Redskins unless the team agrees to change its name. adweek.com/brand-marketin…
The investor letter to @PepsiCo, for example, cites the company’s “decision to sunset the Aunt Jemima brand is an important and meaningful step,” and calls on it to continue that commitment to divesting from racist mascots by ending its relationship with the Redskins.
The investor letter to @Nike applauds the brand's stated commitment to anti-racism and its work with @Kaepernick7, but asks that the brand extend its values to the Native American community as well by dropping the Redskins.
“There is absolutely no place for racism or unequal treatment anywhere, and we must unequivocally speak out and reject it when we see it,” said @FedEx in a June 1 statement. Investors said sponsoring @Redskins “runs contrary to the very sentiments expressed by the company.”
For context, some of the investment firms and groups behind these letters were also involved in #DAPL divestment—which caused banks to lose an estimated $7.5 billion as cities, etc, pulled accounts and terminated relationships. Now that could happen to @Redskins and the @NFL.
Also new: NFL Hall of Famer and NBC Football Night in American analyst says he will not say the team's name on air.
Superbowl champ Michael Bennett says it's time for @Redskins to change its name:
More context: though the team's current owner has said he will "never" change the name, the team just decided last week to remove all traces of its racist ex-owner, the man who named the @Redskins. His granddaughter told Fox News the name *should* change. foxnews.com/sports/redskin…
