This person was paid $23 million a year to be a public disaster. And yet I was pulled into a meeting at NBC News one day and told they “just don’t need an LGBT reporter” and was being let go, regardless of how much traffic my stories were getting.
I want to clarify this had nothing to do with NBC Out which is a separate team and is 100% great (though the company could put way more resources behind it). And I was able to move into a role at MSNBC, but not as an LGBT reporter.
I’m airing this now because I find it frustrating that massive (nay, obscene) resources in mainstream media are put behind people like Megyn Kelly while LGBT coverage is seen as too niche, even when it’s a constant federal policy onslaught.
My experience working at NBC was wonderful in so many ways but I felt I was constantly being urged to do something else besides reporting the LGBT beat. That’s frustrating because LGBT news is SO important right now, and frankly I do it really well. That should be the priority.
