#CMSBd meeting is starting now. CMS is discussing reopening plans for the fall.
Chair @elysedashew says there will be a thorough review of 3 plans

- Full reopening
- Partial reopening
- Remote learning
Here are the three different plans CMS is looking at.
CMS is anticipating daily temperature checks for students as soon as they get off the bus and before they go into the building. Every staff member and every visitor will have to go through this process too
Some things to expect:

- No self service food in the cafeteria
- Plexiglass in the front office
- Social distanced classroom arrangements
CMS has ordered two face coverings for each employee. CDC guidance calls for all school staff, adult visitors, middle and high schoolers to wear masks. Elementary students are not required but highly recommended if able
CMS is increasing the amount of hand dryers instead of paper towels in the restroom. CMS is replacing a lot of toilets that have handles with toilets that have sensors. Water fountains will be cleaned frequently. It is against code to remove them.
School buses:

Based on DHHS guidance, CMS will only be able to have 1 student in each seat. That means for a typical 72 passenger bus, only 24 students will be able to ride it at a time
CMS is considering purchasing masks for students who don't have them. K-5 students will be strongly encouraged to wear face coverings but not required
CMS has already spent $2 million in preparation for the school year
Each CMS school will have at least one dedicated room for isolation. Students who fail health screenings will have to wait in it until parents are called. Multiple children are not able to be isolated in the same location. So CMS may need backup rooms. Still working on this
But if the Staples guy is trying to drop off paper and fails the temperature check screening, he won't be taken to the isolation room. He'll have to drop his paper and go
CMS estimates it will take 15 seconds per adult and 30 seconds per student to do temperature checks.
This is just a fascinating CMS meeting and some of these proposals are hard to imagine. You can watch live here: facebook.com/cmsboe/videos/…
CMS student representative @gabrielschuhl is encouraging CMS to require 3rd, 4th and 5th graders to wear face masks.
Lunch: The menu is going to be limited. Vending machines likely will be shut down. There will be a meat, a vegetable, a fruit and milk. #CMSBd member @MargaretMarsh84 says she would like to see CMS use cafeterias if possible
At this point in time, the state is not providing additional personnel to do daily temperature checks. This will likely fall on staff.
CMS is ramping up recruitment for custodians. 13 head custodian positions are vacant. 60 custodian positions are vacant.
We're talking about Plan A now- full capacity.

6 foot social distancing is not possible
Someone in the FB comments is asking if #CMSBd member Thelma Byers-Bailey is actually at the beach right now. No, that is a Zoom background
#CMSBd member Thelma Byers-Bailey:

"I know kids don't like masks, but they don't like seat belts either and they adjust to them."
Looking at Plan B now- 50% capacity with moderate social distancing
Plan B:

- Possible some students always in classroom, others always remote OR rotate between in/out of classroom
- Max of 12 students per classroom Pre K- K
- Max of 16 students per classroom all other grades
One scenario- all grades rotate 1/3 of students on an A, B, C scenario. Students would go to school for a week instead of daily as some other cities are doing.
HS Plan B scenario:

Grades 9-11 rotate 1/3 of students on an A, B, C schedule with in person learning 4 days of the week, remote learning on Friday

Grade 12- entire class attends in person on Friday, other 4 days remote
This is all overwhelming, complicated and challenging. I can't imagine how parents, students, teachers and staff are feeling right now if they are watching this.
I don't know where @rhondalennon is but it looks nice and relaxing
"If we go into plan B, Lord knows there will be a lot of things we will have to be put into place to make it operational" - Chair @elysedashew
"Gabe, high schoolers never get close to one another"

(This comment was made sarcastically)
#CMSBd member @rhondalennon asks about music education classes. She cites the CDC's superspreader study on the Washington choir practice. CMS staff says once a reopening model is determined, these decisions will be made cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/6…
Teachers with underlying health conditions might be able to be assigned to remote learning only. But that decision won't happen until Governor Roy Cooper provides guidance on the statewide directives
The same teacher is responsible for the remote learning students and in person instruction.
We're moving on to Plan C. Television news reporters on deadline rejoice @Chandler_TV
Plan C- All remote learning.
There are challenges with remote learning ranging from food access to technology
A full-time remote option will be available if CMS students are back in the classroom
There is a provision right now in state law that prohibits remote instruction until August 24, per @crjeterjr. School starts August 17 #ncpol
#CMSBd member @rhondalennon stresses the Board is not leaning toward any of the plans. The Board is waiting to hear from Governor Roy Cooper and preparing for all scenarios

"We are not leaning. We are waiting"
#CMSBd member Sean Strain says he prefers Plan A if is safe to do so

Here's a recap of this thread. 7 weeks til school is back in session. Who knows what is going to happen between now and then. CMS is preparing for everything. Live at 11

This was one of the more challenging meetings to summarize in my 6 years of reporting in CLT. We go in depth at 11 so I wasn’t limited to 1:15 as I would be in earlier shows but even with more time it was hard fit everything in. Highly encourage parents to watch the full meeting
