“Together, we’re taking an important stride towards a better future for seniors in our province. Home care and long-term care systems that improve seniors’ quality of life and protects their health.” @AndreaHorwath#LTCsummit
“Ontarians believe in taking care of one another.
The COVID-19 pandemic has put this core value on display in a lot of ways.” - @AndreaHorwath#LTCsummit
“But it has felt like there are two, separate COVID-19 pandemics. The one in our communities, where we all worked together to stop the spread…and the one that tore through long-term care homes across the province.” - @AndreaHorwath#LTCsummit
#LTCSummit Fact: More than 1,800 of the 2,650 people who lost their lives to COVID-19 in Ontario were long-term care residents.
“I’m so thankful to the courageous members of our Armed Forces for shining a light on the crisis. But it’s far from new.” -@AndreaHorwath
“In the 1990s, Premier Mike Harris opened the floodgates, allowing private, for-profit corporations to start making money on long-term care in Ontario."
“That same Mike Harris is currently the board chair of one of the biggest private for-profit corporations in long-term care — Chartwell.”
“Some of you joined me in calling for a find-and-fix inquiry three years ago, at the time of the Wettlaufer inquiry. And you know that didn’t happen. The last government blocked it.” - @AndreaHorwath
#LTCSummit Fact: Over the last year, this government has done only nine comprehensive resident quality inspections out of 626 long-term care homes. #onpoli
"And the personal support workers we’ve lionized as heroes of the pandemic – folks who are predominantly women, and especially women of colour – are paid barely above minimum wage." - @AndreaHorwath#LTCSummit
“There is no doubt that we have to keep COVID-19 on the front-burner. We need to stamp out those remaining hotspots and protect long-term care and retirement homes from a second wave.” - @AndreaHorwath#LTCSummit
“Let’s promise every senior, today and for generations to come, that we will change home care and long-term care, forever… and that we will never go back.” - @AndreaHorwath#LTCSummit
“I want to move away from big, hospital-like long-term care institutions… and start building homes.” - @AndreaHorwath#LTCSummit
“I believe that every senior has a right to high-quality, dignified living, and compassionate support and care, regardless of the size of their bank account.” - @AndreaHorwath#LTCSummit
We're introducing @AminaJabbar is a geriatrician with a practice in Mississauga (Ontario). With a focus on populations that have been traditionally marginalized.
"With Long-Term Care, we are looking at a waiting list of 35,000 people. So they are struggling to find a place they want to be, that's safe, and a place that they can actually call home." - @AminaJabbar
"We are making connections to how staffing issues connect to quality of care. Staff have been talking about it for years, families and residents have been talking about it for years. And we are finally having this important conversation." - @AminaJabbar
On message to the Ford government "We need to fix Long-Term Care desperately, there is no time to waste." - @AminaJabbar

A timeline of Merrilee Fullerton, Doug Ford’s Minister of Long-Term Care, downplaying how many seniors are getting sick and dying in long-term care, playing a callous numbers game to avoid having to spend money to hire staff and implement infection control measures. 1/6
On Sept. 22, there were 58 resident cases:
“Ninety-nine per cent of our long-term-care homes have no resident cases.” - Merrilee Fullerton 2/6 hansardindex.ontla.on.ca/hansardespeake…
On Oct. 5, there were 136 resident cases:
“98% of our long-term-care homes have no resident cases.”

Premier Doug Ford and Health Minister Christine Elliott lied when they said their decision to cancel many public health protections was based on expert advice.
A TIMELINE OF LIES brought to you by Doug Ford's Conservative government:
Doug Ford, Nov. 3: “This framework was developed in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health, the Public Health Measures Table, local medical officers of health, and other health system experts.” #FordLied#Covid19#Covid19Ontario
FACT CHECK TIMELINE: As Ontario reaches yet another record high number of new #COVID19 cases, Doug Ford needs to explain why he and his govt have been minimizing the impact of COVID’s second wave on Ontario families, and cutting back on public health measures...

October 6 — 548 new COVID-19 cases reported in Ontario.
Today, the courts ruled against Doug Ford’s cut to OHIP coverage for Ontarians when they’re travelling.
This makes SEVEN court battles lost by Doug Ford and his PC govt, wasting precious public dollars defending his cutting agenda. #onpoli
There’s a lot to unpack here, first of all, the ‘free market’ would not have the business opportunity to operate COVID-19 tests at a high price if the gov’t was on top of testing – but they’re leaving people behind.
Everyday Ontarians are waiting hours in line to get their COVID-19 test. While the gov’t has been saying for months that “they’re hammering away at testing” but experts disagree: ontariondp.ca/news/fact-chec…
If testing was as easy and accessible as it should be with a public health system, there would not be a market for $400 testing kits for those that can afford it. Demand the gov’t invest in testing now: ontariondp.ca/demand-covid-1…
