.@IDSAInfo's CID journal publishing open letter from >200 scientists to @WHO later this week, outlining evidence for aerosol spread of #COVID #coronavirus. We covered this in a special bonus episode of EPIDEMIC.fm @EPIDEMICpodcast released March 20th.

"There is significant potential for inhalation exposure to viruses in microscopic respiratory droplets at short to medium distances (up to several meters, or room scale), and we are advocating for the use of preventive measures to mitigate this route of airborne transmission."
"viruses are released during exhalation, talking, and coughing in microdroplets small enough to remain aloft in air and pose a risk of exposure at distances beyond 1 to 2 m from an infected individual"
"at typical indoor air velocities, a 5 μm droplet will travel tens of meters, much greater than the scale of a typical room, while settling from a height of 1.5 m to the floor"
What are implications of #COVID #coronavirus aerosol transmission?
- You should wear a mask when around people who're not in your household bubble.
- Open doors/windows to improve indoor ventilation.
- Healthcare workers should probably wear N95 masks or the equivalent at all times on the job (as I have been).
- We need to reassess HVAC systems in schools, nursing homes, businesses, & other public buildings.
- re: HVAC systems, some possibilities we need to consider and study: How to minimize air recirculation? Increase air exchange rates? Use air filtration or UV germicidal irradiation?
- And, perhaps most obviously, avoid crowds, especially indoors.
