The Inquisition, was a group of institutions within the Catholic Church whose aim was to combat heresy. The Inquisition of Goa was the most horrific of all the Inquisition in the world.

Francis Xavier who is considered by Christian religious leaders as a saint and a miraculous person, landed in Goa on 6th May 1542 with a resolve to uproot paganism from Indian soil and replacing it with Christianity.
And so all plans of persecution and oppression of the Hindus came along with him. All religious policies and procedures of forcible and fraudulent conversions and demolitions of the Hindu Temples and idols were undertaken under his guidance and missionary zeal.
Thus it was St.Francis Xavier who laid the foundation for the ‘compassionate’ (barbarous!) for an organised system of Holy Inquisition against the Hindus in Goa.

Methods used by colonist were so gruesome for converting people to Christianity. The crimes, in the eyes of the inquisition, were of different kinds: blasphemies, impiety, sodomy, necromancy and witchcraft.
For example if any of the newly converted took part of the ‘superstitious assemblies’ (Jewish Sabbaths) or former idolatries ( Hindu gods) practiced of yore, were enough to cause a victim to be burnt at the stake.
If he confessed at the last moment, and was truly sorry, he would be condemned to the garrote for capital punishment, and then burnt. Otherwise he would be burnt alive. Thousands of people were killed after gruesome torture.
The Inquisition was proclaimed extinct in 1774 by Marquis of Pombal, but it was reinstated by the pious Queen Maria I in 1778. The Napoleonic wars, occupation of Portugal by the French, and of Goa by the British, had their salutary effects...
