A thread about the different types of #sloths.

Not all sloths are the same. There are 6 species in total.

4 species of three-toed sloths and 2 species of two-toed sloths.

The brown-throated sloth (Bradypus variegatus) is the most common three-toed sloth. It is found in Central & South America.

Commonly between 40-69cm, and can weigh as much as 6.5kg.

The Pygmy three-toed sloth (Bradypus pygmaeus) is critically endangered, with 79 left in the wild in 2012.

These smaller #sloths (~50cm long) are found in Isla Escudo de Veraguas in Panama.

Other than being smaller, they generally resemble the brown-throated sloth above.

The pale-throated three-toed #sloth (Bradypus tridactylus) looks very similar to the brown-throated sloth. However, they have a pale yellow patch on the throat.

While they might not be able to see color, they have a good sense of smell and hearing.

The maned sloth (Bradypus torquatus) is a three-toed sloth found in Brazil.

Maned sloths are bigger than other #sloths. They are also classified as 'vulnerable'.

They spend 60-80% of their day sleeping. Every day is a Sunday for them.

The Hoffmann's two-toed #sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni) is nocturnal in some locations.

Some speculate this is because they compete for space with brown-throated sloths that are active by day.

Hoffmann's #sloths are generally larger than three-toed sloths.

These #sloths look similar to the Hoffmann's sloth above. They are also primarily nocturnal.

In terms of size, they're as big as a small dog.
