Shiva is said to have defeated Kali in a fierce dance duel by lifting his foot upwards- the Oordhva tandavam posture. Also called as Ratna Sabhapati.Kali is depicted in a dance posture as well here.

Legend :

Once Adhi Sesha felt MahaVishnu unusually heavy.On asking for the reason, MahaVishnu told that he remembered the dance that Lord Shiva did once & the pleasure of reminiscence that made him heavy.

Inspired ,Adhi Sesha wanted to see the dance so came to chidambaram & worshipped Lord Shiva as Pathanchali along with sage Vyaghra padar, who too was worshipping Shiva to see His dance.To fulfill, Shiva danced in the golden hall on thiruvathirai #AnandaThadavam

Meenakshi Sundaraeswar temple, #Madurai,TN - Rajatha Sabha -Velli ambalam(Silver Hall)

Only place where Natarajar stands on His left leg with the right foot raised - Shiva obliged Pandya King Rajashekaran bhakti to change his leg in the dancing form. #Sandhya Thandavam

Kandhimadhi amman Nellaiappar Temple
Tirunelveli,TN - Thamira Sabha - Copper Hall of Dance - #Muni Thandavam

This hall was used for meditation in earlier days, but now its kept open only on the occasion of Arudra Darisanam (occurring in the Tamil month Margazhi Dec 15 -Jan 15)

Near Kutraleswar temple,Kutralam,TN - Chitra Sabha - Hall of Paintings -located in a scenic locale away from the main temple.

Chitra sabha is full of mural paintings -Chitra Natarajar -Thiripura Thandavam
