STAND WITH HONG KONG 🇭🇰

Security Law will Diminish Freedoms Worldwide

(1) The controversial National Security Law has been passed. Hongkongers are now subject to draconian laws which strip them of their basic rights and freedoms like never before.

(2) Businesses that are based in or have any links with Hong Kong are battling the same laws that will inevitably suffocate their basic commercial operations. China’s reach even extends to diminishing the freedoms of academic institutions around the world.
(3) Truly to defend democracy and the freedoms from which we all benefit, the world must sanction and tangibly oppose China for its takeover of Hong Kong and the grave threat that it now poses to the democratic world.
POLITICAL UPDATE 🇭🇰

Security law poses serious threat to business

(4) When the new security law was implemented on 30th June, the Financial Secretary of Hong Kong, Paul Chan Mo-po, claimed that it would enable business to thrive across the city.
(5) In reality, this could not be further from the truth. The new law will actually criminalise businesses for undergoing what the democratic world regards to be ordinary operations

wsj.com/articles/hong-…
(6) - such as disputes with Chinese companies or market research & financial analysis of Chinese state firms. Given the broad interpretation of the law which targets secession, subversion, terrorism & foreign interference,
(7) - all business owners in Hong Kong (subject to the same draconian restrictions as its citizens) should seriously consider whether their businesses can survive this choke hold on fundamental freedoms.
(8) In the interests both of Hong Kong and of all international businesses which trade or have any connection to the city, the free world must take concrete actions to demonstrate their disapproval.
9) Free countries should not seek to profit from a city without protecting its citizens from tyranny. For all that businesses worldwide have gained from Hong Kong & its citizens, now is the time for the world to speak up in defence of Hongkongers’ human rights & basic freedoms.
ARRESTS MADE HOURS AFTER NEW LAW CAME INTO EFFECT.

(10) Despite the severity and gravity of the new security law and the heavy police presence, thousands of Hongkongers defiantly took to the streets on 1st July...

(11) 1st July, the anniversary of the day that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) was established. Despite the peaceful nature of the march, nearly 400 Hongkongers were arrested -

(12) 10 were arrested specifically for allegedly breaking the new law, which criminalises acts including displaying flags or banners (which must be censored when reported by the media)

(13) and chanting slogans deemed contrary to Beijing's will. Detention and arrest remain arbitary, as demonstrated by the arrest of a lifelong Liverpool football fan.

(14) These events demonstrate the power that this new law has to fundamentally undermine the freedoms and autonomy that define Hong Kong.
(15) The democratic world must stand with Hong Kong and provide all possible support to Hongkongers for their fight for freedom and sanction those officials responsible for the passing and enactment of such draconian law.
WARNING FIRED TO AUSTRALIA OVER ACADEMIC COLLUSION WITH CHINA

(16) China's threat to the academic integrity of democratic institutions has resurfaced following the case of Drew Pavlou, an Australian activist & suspended student at Queensland University

theguardian.com/australia-news…
(17) Pavlou has reportedly been suspended from the university for two years, the length of his Senate position, for criticising the university’s strong links with Chinese Government organisations, notably the Confucius Institute.
(18) More specifically, he was scorned for questioning the University’s acceptance of significant funding from such organisations and how this may impact the institution’s ability to teach freely.
(19) Yesterday, Baroness Natalie Bennett and Andrew Rosindell MP, two prominent UK parliamentarians, wrote to the High Commissioner for Australia, George Brandis QC,

(20)to mark their "grave concern..[about the] implications for academic freedom, freedom of speech, freedom to protest & other political freedoms that underpin Western world". If the reports are accurate, then this move typifies the danger that China poses to the world at large.
(21) Ultimately, Drew Pavlou's case demonstrates not only China's capability but also its intention to restrict academic freedoms around the world.
22) All-Party Parl. Group (APPG) on Hong Kong & APPG for Australia & New Zealand are hosting a webinar next week, for which Drew Pavlou will speak alongside Prof Andreas Fulda & an anonymous Sheffield Uni student about China's threat to academic freedom
