For many different reasons, it is important that our kids can return to school. And there are countries who have done so safely and successfully.
But there are several practical things to consider when our kids are going back to school. A long thread of questions on #covid :
1. How do we keep kids safe in the classroom? How do we maintain 6ft distance? Half days of kids with classes at half capacity ? Plexiglass shields around desks? Everyone wears masks ?

2. If a teacher tests positive for COVID19 they will have to quarantine for at least 10 days. What does that mean for the kids they teach? If they teach 2 classes of 20 kids each. All 40 kids would have to quarantine for 10 days too

3. If a kid tests positive for COVID19 they will have to quarantine for at least 10 days. What does that mean for the teacher, for the students in the classroom, for other kids in school?

4. If a teacher has been in contact with someone who is COVID19 positive they will have to quarantine for 14 days. Will the kids in classes they teach have to as well? Will teacher have to pay for the substitute?

5. If a kid has been in contact with someone who is COVID19 positive they will have to quarantine for 14 days. What about their teacher, classmates and other kids at school?
#covid19 @DShepYEG @AdrianaLaGrange @CMOH_Alberta
6. In the “guidance for school re-entry-scenario 1” guidelines by Alberta gov, it states “schools/school authorities should establish their own COVID-19 plans prior to reopening schools”. And they can “contact Enviornmental Public Health in your Zone for assistance”......
6. Continued..... so who specifically will guide the schools/school authorities in this? @CMOH_Alberta ? I can’t imagine the schools would
have to come up with a plan on their own
#covid19 @DShepYEG @AdrianaLaGrange @CMOH_Alberta
7. The same document asks for “increased frequency of cleaning and disinfection of high-touch areas and equipment inside and outside classrooms”. Who will do this inside the classroom? Janitors? Teachers?
#covid19 @DShepYEG @AdrianaLaGrange @CMOH_Alberta
8. Let’s say kids go back to school for half days, or alternating days. What do parents do who work full-time? Stay home for months longer? Will their employer accommodate this?
#covid19 @DShepYEG @AdrianaLaGrange @CMOH_Alberta
9. What about if a child has to quarantine at home? Do the parents need to quarantine with them?
Etc etc etc
#covid19 @DShepYEG @AdrianaLaGrange @CMOH_Alberta
10. What about children or teachers with pre-existing conditions which puts them at higher risk of complications from COVID19? What can we do to support them?
#covid19 @DShepYEG @AdrianaLaGrange @CMOH_Alberta
11. What about children with special needs? What can we do to support them ?
#covid19 @DShepYEG @AdrianaLaGrange @CMOH_Alberta
I am sure there are many many more questions that can be asked. I am merely asking these questions to make sure our kids can return to school, do so as safely as possible and to ask what we can do to help specific groups as well
#covid19 @DShepYEG @AdrianaLaGrange @CMOH_Alberta
There are other countries where kids have gone back to school successfully. We shouldn’t have to reinvent the wheel.
If all stakeholders work together, we should be able to this as well. Education, Public Health, Teachers, Parents
