As an administrator, my job was to ensure the safety of my students to pursue their academic careers. That was everywhere instruction occurred— in the @FAMUSJGC82 building, on campus, in internships, or online. Within my first month on the job, I would be challenged. 2/
We discovered a homeless person living in our building. He was gaining access to labs and hiding places in the building. We had video of him exiting the building and hanging out in library spaces @FAMUSJGC82. 3/
The security breach necessitated a full audit of the building property and surplus of equipment and cleanup to remove access, hiding places, and risk for students. We even looked at enhanced security for the @fanusjgc82 building. 4/
Then, I had my first student sexual assault case. A young lady who received no support from @FAMU_1887 in protecting her against her attacker. I ran the system with her, learning for myself how #sexualassault is reported and handled at @FAMU_1887. SPOILER ALERT: It’s not. 5/

Yep. Our homeless person was sitting in our student lounge. Just watching TV. The police chief approached him. He said he was an alum. Flashed a Rattler alumni card. He said the WiFi in the @FAMUSJGC82 was better than his home in Atlanta, so he was using our labs? 😱😳🤷🏽♀️
So the chief takes him into custody. And issues a trespass warrant. Do not step foot on campus for one year. I issue the first of several safety alerts to faculty, staff and students. We discover tech losses and other door breaches. We stay vigilant. I walk the building daily. 8/
I gather my security quote for upgrades to the building. I started in October 1, 2018 and by December 2018 I had a security upgrade proposal to the Provost. Talk to this person, he said, to find the funds. Then, I waited. And waited. To find $$ for the safety of @FAMUSJGC82 9/

Twitter was exploding with the story and I became part of the narrative for being the only administrator at @FAMU_1887 that had actually provided support to a #sexual assault victim or so it was being said. I found out from the police chief who called me on my personal phone. 10/

I was asked to go here for support. Rewrite the security proposal three ways to get the attention of some funding stream. Nothing came of this. Ever. No cameras. No extra security for our digital/tech supplies for students...which had been found missing @FAMUSJGC82 in our audit.
You might ask, why didn’t I use my school budget to shore up our security if that was a priority? Because, my 2018-2019 operating budget was $25,000. That’s right. I didn’t stutter. That’s how academic budgeting has happened @FAMU_1887. FOR THE WHOLE YEAR😡🤦🏽♀️💩 /#

Graduation week. A senior student comes to me in severe distress. He’s been sexually exploited, groomed and solicited for money. Using anonymous online phone accounts and money transfers, someone within my building, ON MY STAFF, is involved in @FAMUSJGC82 he says. /#
...aaaaaand he says, I am not the only one😳 Seems some of my male broadcast students had been targeted. One former employee ran from @FAMU_1887 dropping this student report on someone else on her way out the door. As a mandatory reporter, she knew and didn’t report. Shame. 😡 /#

Despite being sidelined, I continue to lead national conversations about teaching this fall. And calling out how are students are compromised in these online spaces. And WE HAVE NO CLUE how to keep you safe online, none. Especially @FAMU_1887 @FAMUSJGC82 Imagine better.✊🏾
Well, actually, I do have a clue. But Title IX, campus police are ill equipped to investigate these crimes. Worse, their lack of knowledge of the law and rape culture means my students are revictimized through the “process.” @FAMUSJGC82
After 17 months of “experience” running the @FAMU_1887 gauntlet, it was clear more supports were needed for faculty to understand their responsibility in calling out student abuses. I created a guide for all @FAMU_1887 to dealing with distressed students. Something to help them.
I added Tallahassee specific resources and worked with my staff to update all the relevant contact info and procedure @FAMU_1887 I pushed it out in February 2020 on social and to faculty for review. A comprehensive resource guide. You’re welcome?!? No, crickets.
