Let's get to know Calvin:
- Founder of Life Reimagined
- Graduated with a degree in public policy
- Led teams at @toptal
- Spends his time writing, podcasting & surfing
“I really didn’t like spending 15 hours a day in a cubicle doing grunt work. I knew there had to be more to life, so I planned an escape from the cubicle.” 💯
He was more joyous during that initial period of remote work than any other point in his life. 😀
He also got a beach-front apartment in Cartagena, Colombia with his best friend from college and spent the next 6 months traveling through South America.
He didn’t really know remote working existed or that it would be something that he enjoyed so much. 🌎
He was just looking to join a startup, and the role he found at Toptal happened to be fully #remote.
He could design life on his terms. He had the flexibility to build a life that works best for him. 😀
The bad:
Struggled in creating a separation from work. He also finds himself working at ten or eleven at night from his couch. 😕
@zoom_us for video conferencing
@Google Suite for collaboration & productivity
@DynalistHQ to organize his digital notes
@SlackHQ for communication
“I hired one of my best friends and convinced the company to fly him to Croatia to meet me for onboarding. I spent the next month onboarding him to the role while cruising through Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Serbia, and Hungary.” 😎
- Try not to get paralyzed by information overload. Lots of messages and alerts make it easy to get overwhelmed with information.
- Find a way to filter through the noise and focus on what’s truly important for the long-term.
As the Director of Business Operations at Mechanism Ventures, he supports startups with growth and operations.
He is also focused on growing the impact of Life Reimagined, the organization he started in 2017 to help people improve the quality of their lives.
Feels that companies aren't focusing much on community and connection
Expects to see more coworking spaces, coliving experiences, and in-person events that help people feel a sense of belonging, regardless of where they are in the world
