But the key components - like the processors, display panels, memory chips, cameras, are heavily imported. Nearly 80% of these components come from outside India, with 67% from only one country - China!
They are produced in Semiconductor Fabrication Plants, known as FABs in short. This is where silicon is turned into microchips.

ISRO & DRDO have their own FABs, but they are for Space and Defence tech only. Indians have designed nice microchips like Shakti and Ajit. But India lacks the FAB or foundry for them

But the money made by just assembling in India, is less than $70 billion per year. The global hardware market is $3500+ billion!!
Build FABs.. Very critical for India.
