Be vocal about local. Let's start with the possible goods and services available. Use #swadeshi wherever possible. We must ensure that #MakeInIndia should get new vigour. Quality product with apt pricing will do the needful.
#atmanirbharbharat
#AatmaNirbharBharat does not imply isolationism or becoming exclusionist. We’ll build capacities, skill people and compete globally acquiring strengths. We’ll build the #Local. After all, every global brand began with their #Local strength. We shall integrate with GVCs.
5 Pillars of Self Reliant Bharat
1. Economy
2. Infrastructure
3. Technology driven system
4. Demography
5. Demand
For this we require Land /Labour/Law/Liquidity. #atmanirbharbharat

Many commentators (see eg. @dravirmani @TheJaggi and @ShekharGupta) have argued for Labour Law reform in India, in the context of UP Govt action to scrap a raft of current laws. Many have cited the example of Bangladesh. Here is B'desh Labour Act 2006.
ilo.org/dyn/travail/do…
This is a comprehensive piece of legislation that reads like a Trade Unionist's wish list. Maternity rights, workers compensation, retirement benefits, health and safety at work, employment of minors.. its all there. This is progressive legislation indeed. I commend it.
In his Youtube commentary, @ShekharGupta presents an old argument that laws preventing a business owener from firing staff and shitting down a factory with > 100 workers acts as a brake on expansion and scale necessary to become competitive. He did NOT give any other example.

My colleague @ISOcertified & I recently wrote in @Diplomat_APAC on diversifying supply chains in the wake of #COVID19. A few commentators have brought in some skepticism on India’s ability to cash. We're fact-checking some commonly pointed concerns (1)..
thediplomat.com/2020/04/after-…
Skeptics commonly point to restrictive trade regime, labor, land, tax uncertainties & lack of investment strategy. GOI has overcome some of these problems. Due to this reform trajectory, we believe #India is more closer to attracting manufacturing investments than ever before (2)
Some major reforms for which govt doesn’t get enough credit: bridging production cost difference between #India & SE Asia. GOI is bridging through some sector-specific policies. Ex: MeitY's trilogy of manufacturing schemes to provide production, capital & land/infra incentives(3)

#AmartyaSen's great insight was that dreadful disasters (s/as mass starvation) do not happen in a democracy because news of the early signs of distress are seen, heard and responded by those in power.
That theory is being tested in #Modi's #India. And so far found wanting
A willingly controlled and spontaneously sycophantic media refuses to hold the Great Leader to account; such criticism as may be made by intellectuals and a remnant of the free press is silenced by the howls of mobs on social media. Free debate is replaced by adulatory paeans.
Respectful discussion of policy choices has been pushed aside by a Know-it-all leadership that adopts a We-Can-never-admit-to-any-failings style of governance that places false propaganda over real performance, empty spin over true substance.

Modi: The lockdown was the only method left for us.

(I failed to take preventive steps)

Modi: "The lockdown will be economically costly, but the NATION will have to bear the cost. This is to save YOUR life."

(YOU will have to pay for MY mistakes)

#CurfewInIndia
Not questioning lockdown, but drawing attention to questions that need asking.

How did we get here? Why were preventive steps not taken? Who is accountable?

How is it being implemented? Is it done sensibly & sensitively, considering ground realities & vulnerable people?
THEY'll say "this is an emergency, not the time to question the govt."

False. There is no wrong time to ask right questions.

In fact, we are in this crisis bcuz we didn't question the govt. Let's not repeat the mistake.

HAL has successfully completed IOC for #LUH. HAL is all poised for production. Had the orders bn given by MoD 2yrs in advance, HAL would hv set up assy line by now & we would hv seen LUH getting inducted rightaway. The ancient looking Cheetah helis needed
Replacement like a decade ago. But MoD not only sat on orders for LUH, but it also didn't bother to oder Ka226. So currently we have neither and our Air Worriers are still having to endanger their lives flying those ancient machines.
@rajnathsingh @PMOIndia should answer why.?
And now when #LUH is all ready for production and could be inducted starting 3yrs from now if @PMOIndia @rajnathsingh lean on the babudom and HAL management to rush thru the contract process, GOI is trying to import Ka226, which itself will only come in 2025, and that too

This is noteworthy. In 1953 after the Korean armistice South Korea was an impoverished country that stood way lower than even India at the time in income, productivity, GDP and any other measure one cares to name.
@SJha1618
@smita1900
@SJha1618 @smita1900 And yet here they are in 2019 exporting large numbers of Main Battle Tanks of their own design to a European country, while we bought T-72 recovery vehicles from that selfsame European country some years ago, though we've been licence manufacturing the T-72 for three + decades.
@SJha1618 @smita1900 We're forced to import 1500 HP MTU engines from Germany for our Arjun MBT because we never developed high power engines indigenously (or any other modern engine for that matter). The South Koreans OTOH have developed state of the art engine tech.

US China trade war - no gain for India? #MakeInIndia?

Out of 56 companies that relocated their production out of China in the past 1.5 years, only three went to India and two to Indonesia.

26 relocated to Vietnam, 11 went to Taiwan and 8 to Thailand.
m.economictimes.com/news/economy/i…
"On the surface, India and Indonesia both have the ideal demographics to be global manufacturing powerhouses to rival China which at the moment makes one-fifth of the world's goods. First of all, they have the second and fourth-largest populations..."

m.economictimes.com/news/economy/i…
".... Furthermore, India's labour cost is half that of China's.

So why are India and Indonesia not receiving their fair share of factories relocating from China?"

(1/n) Why US arms suppliers are not ideal partners for Indi...yet!! @LockheedMartin @LMIndiaNews

Arms Deals are foremost about delivering trustworthy, sustainable security to customers - in peace+war.
US suppliers do this well - but for Pak, not India.

livemint.com/news/india/loc…
@LockheedMartin @LMIndiaNews (2/n) US arms lobby's (LM) hardsell for supplying MLU/upgrades/new jets to Pak - from 2008 till 2016 - inspite of proliferation, OBL, etc. indicates a strong Pak bias, revealed here:

Must read for those wanting to know how US arms industry works.
library.clerk.house.gov/reference-file…
@LockheedMartin @LMIndiaNews (3/n) Refer previous.
This is a Congressional hearing which exposed Pak's proliferation record, repeated aggression against India, & fear that F16 tech would be shared with China, etc.
Not only did the sale go thru, but US adm was even ready to pay for it from US taxpayer money.

I went to the Bangalore General Post Office today to enquire about a parcel that's been stuck in transit since July. It's somewhere in there. One customs official was valiantly opening everything to determine the tax on all the $1 and $2 trinkets people order from AliExpress.
Each of those bags contains parcels from the landing ports of Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai. Anything that arrived in the past few weeks hasn't even been recorded as having arrived. They're months behind on the backlog. Here's a sample. Chennai to Bangalore took June to September.
Why is this happening? Back in 2015, a customs official showed me a memo. All personal imports above ₹2000 (i.e., you're not a registered importer) we're to be taxed at a flat rate of 40 something percent. The official explained that this was to encourage #MakeInIndia.

#FinanceMinister has today unleashed the best shot so far in #Modinomics!

This is a Yug-parivartan move. Endless dimensions on which #NewIndia will be rocketing up now! 1/n
The battle on Black-money waged by @narendramodi Ji will now find a long term leash! No one was born to be a thief. High taxes motivated people to be. That motivation is diluted big time today! An honest, compliant, economic powerhouse of a #NewIndia is now enabled. 2/n
Everyone getting amazed that this Govt. is ready to earn less and spend more is totally wrong. #Modinomics magic is not yet understood. Laffer Curve clearly stands proven over 100s of years. Convexity of Tax-collection to Tax-rate is well know. 3/n

India is cutting the corporate tax rate to 25.2% from 30%. This is to promote growth and investment.

India to allow local companies to pay income tax at 22% . The new effective rate on new manufacturing companies is 17.01%.

All part of the strategy to avoid the 5% growth trend
Indonesia is planning to cut taxes to 20% from 25% starting 2021. Both Indonesia and India are slashing tax rates to be more competitive. This is in response to entice investors to come to those countries & also to stay. @Trinhnomics stated that US tax reform'll push for this too
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 #MakeinIndia #India

New domestic manufacturing companies incorporated after October 1, can pay income tax at a rate of 15%without any incentives.

Meaning, the effective tax rate for new manufacturing companies will be 17.01% inclusive of all surcharge and cess.

What now?

1. Reduce the GST to 16%. It will cost 1.8 lakh crores, which is roughly what the govt got from the RBI as a windfall. People spending the money has a much higher chance of driving the economy than the Centre spending it.
2. Cancel all the Centrally Sponsored Schemes. Give that money to the states, or even better to the local bodies. Public expenditure at lower levels of governance will give the economy higher velocity than the slow pace of Central expenditure.
3. India is urbanising, but the legislatures are full of candidates from rural areas. Make the Delimitation Commission permanent, and redraw constituency boundaries WITHIN states every 10 years to reflect migration to cities.

For achieving USD 5 Trillion Economy, masive investment is essential. We Indians have to learn from History. After the WW2 Japan Germany & USA had promoted investment IGNORING Source and resources of funds.
Criminalisation of commercial transactions & aspect of business have virtually killed the appetite for entreprenuership. Businessmen takes great risk by putting their life savings into their business with no guarntee that it will succeed or continue to remain successful
Govt Owned several PSU have failed and many are bleeding despite best control and having talented ppl in the management. Govt has parted with many and continue to suffer losses with rest of them. If Govt PSUs can fail then why can't Pvt businesses can fail ?

Today is #NationalHandloomDay. Handwoven textiles are the original #MakeInIndia product. The handloom sector employs the second largest no of people in India after agriculture, in weaving as well as in ancillary activities like dyeing, spinning, setting up the loom, starching etc
Every state in India has its own tradition of hand-woven textiles. The known history of Indian hand-woven textiles goes back to almost 5000 years, and many of the weaves are still continuing to be woven in an unbroken, living tradition. #NationalHandloomDay #HandloomTwitter
People from the Sindhu-Saraswati civilzation has mastered weaving weaving. A madder-dyed scrap of fabric found at Mohenjo-Dado proves that our people knew the art of growing cotton, spinning yarn, weaving cloth as well as dyeing yarn using natural colours. #NationalHandloomDay

My thoughts on the #saree. This is a rambling collection of thoughts. Please read the whole thread. Even though I always liked Sarees, I started wearing them regularly only when I turned 30
Before that, I gave myself many excuses, the saree was cumbersome, it took too long to wear, it was too much trouble to arrange for blouse, matching underskirt, the works. But as I started dealing it, realised how easy and comfy the garment was.
Today, I understand when younger women and girls tell me that they would like to wear a saree, but it takes too long. Yes, initially it does, but within a few months you will master the art of draping a saree in under seven minutes, and nothing looks more graceful on a woman.

#SupplyChains #India needs to work indipendently with #USA and #China to separate the supply chains headed in the two directions and try to shift as much of them as possible to India

For the first time,@chetan_bhagat seems to touch the right chord in his economic analysis that 6% unemployment rate is due to structural&functional constraints of some key benchmarks like lack of Agrculture devpt, manufacturing ecosystem&service skills.1 timesofindia.indiatimes.com/blogs/The-unde…
The solution lies within the Country which requires deficit funding to reduce&empowering primary unit by restructuring credit line, populist measures like MSP which makes Agri market incompetent in Export market.Similar approach is needed for Manufacturing&Services.
Agri entrepreneurs&Social infrastructure needs to be promoted which means to revive small scale&cottage industries on modern market model as a well aligned ancillary or supplier of Agriculture as it was during Pre-Colonial era. These must be based on #SwadesiModel.1
