Did the #BlackLivesMatter protests lead to the surge in SARS-CoV-2?

In NYC, hospitalizations are at their lowest since March. The city hosted some of the largest BLM protests. (2/5)
Same can be said for Philadelphia, which had weeks of BLM protests. (3/5)
How about Minnesota, the state where George Floyd was murdered?
Hospitalizations are down ~ 65% from their high in May. (4/5)
I'm using hospitalizations as a metric as it's independent of testing increases.

So what caused the surge? Premature reopening of the economy in populous dense cities and states. Those of us in infectious diseases have been saying this since May. (5/5)

Virus Latency, what is it and what does it mean?
Been seeing miscommunication about SARS-CoV-2 and latency, so here's a brief thread on what "latent" or "latency" means in virus infection.
Viruses fall into two broad categories: chronic and acute (1/11)
A chronic virus will infect its host for extended periods of time, often the lifetime of the host. HIV and herpesviruses are examples of this.
An acute infecting virus, such as influenza and rotavirus, are cleared from the body after a few days or weeks (2/11)
A chronic virus can go into latency. This is when a virus is present within a cell, but not actively producing more infectious virus particles. For example, when a herpesvirus infects a cell, its genome can remain in that cell as long as that cell is alive. (3/11)

COVID-19 is the disease state post-infection with SARS-CoV-2. The disease state can last for many weeks after infection with SARS-CoV-2. (1/5)
The COVID-19 disease state can last long after a patient's body has cleared SARS-CoV-2, or has limited virus spread to low/undetectable levels.
How? COVID-19 is caused by the virus's assault, namely in the lungs. This assault takes weeks for a patient's body to repair... (2/5)
... And in many instances, the body's attempts to repair the damage can actually make the lungs worse off. This can lead to a feedback loop of inflammation, causing major restrictions in airflow that may never resolve, leading to death. (3/5)

The terms "aersolization" or "airborne" can be extremely misleading to the public. SARS-CoV-2 absolutely does NOT behave like airborne bacterial spores, which are notoriously sturdy entities that can survive on surfaces for extended periods of time.
Respiratory viruses like SARS-CoV-2 cannot survive outside a body for extended times like spores can.
If you go outside for a jog, there isn't going to be active SARS-CoV-2 particles floating around that was kicked up by someone else.
