Here's the main problem with @SecPompeo's Nixon Library speech, and why it can't - it just can't - inspire anyone to do anything. The problem is @SecPompeo's lack of credibility and moral integrity. How do we know this? Simple.Because he is a senior figure in the administration.
That same Trump administration that crowed incessantly about putting America first is now shopping around for allies in some sort of a new Cold War with China. Ok, China has few friends and, frankly, no one sane will trust Beijing but America has no credibility to lead anyone.
Trump, too, with his pathetic authoritarian instincts, his racism, and - to put it bluntly, his outright stupidity - lacks the moral integrity to marshal anyone's support in any new Cold War.
So, no, this is not a Truman 1947 moment, nor a JFK 1961 moment, not Reagan's Mr Gorbachev tear down this wall moment. It's just Pompeo wanting to appearer way bigger than he is moment, wanting to fill the shoes he has no standing to fill. Sorry, thumbs down all the way through.
Sorry about the rant. It was painful to see @SecPompeo's self-satisfied countenance as he struggled to read his proclamation from the teleprompter. I just kept thinking: Can you really be so out of touch about the damage your administration has done to US standing in the world?
