/ A timely call from @NC_Governor on Congress to extend the $600/week supplement to #unemploymentinsurance authorized by the #CARESAct. In NC, this week currently is the last one for which the supplement is payable.
/ According to @NCDES, some 800,000 people in North Carolina have received the $600/week supplement known as Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (PUC) since March 15. That is almost as many people as live in Charlotte, which is the state's most populous city.
/ Since March 15, according to @NCDES, a total of $6.3 billion has been paid out in #unemploymentinsurance compensation here in NC. The PUC program is responsible for $4.3 billion of that amount (68% of the total).
/ Weekly unemployment insurance claims data, meanwhile, show that the employment situation remains dire in NC. The numbers of new & continuing claims remain elevated.
/ Data from @uscensusbureau, meanwhile, show that 43% of all adults in North Carolina live in a household that has experienced a loss of income since the onset of the #COVID19 crisis in March. Another 30% anticipate a loss of employment income in the coming weeks. #NCeconomy
/ That same survey also found that 25% of adults in North Carolina either missed last month's rent/mortgage payment or lack confidence in making next month's rent/mortgage payment. #NCeconomy
/ Remember the point of the PUC program (& the other #CARESAct provisions) was to make households whole while staying at home in response to the suspension of economic activity needed to protect public health. The aim was to encourage people to stay at home and not go to a job.
/ North Carolina still has not crushed its #COVID19 curve, which is why state & local governments have continued to restrict economic activities. Until conditions, improve economic activity will remain subdued & the prospects of returning to a job or finding one will be dim.
/9 Eliminating PUC before conditions normalize will punish working North Carolinian's for actions out of their control, increase hardship, remove spending power from the economy, reduce sales for businesses, & make the recession that much worse. #SaveThe600 #ExtendUI
