But getting rid of filters will not fix the new law. The new law copy-paste's America's disastrous system of protection for digital locks, like the ones that stop you from using third-party printer ink or playing indie games on your console.

Under the US/Mexican system, bypassing a digital lock is illegal even when you don't violate copyright. That means that unlocking an ebook you own so you can read it after the seller shuts down their servers is illegal.

Software authors can't run their own code on their own devices if they are locked. They can't provide you with code to run on your device, either. Code is speech. This prohibition is pure censorship. It's illegal under Mexican law.

All of these problems are present in the US law, but at least American law mandates hearings every three years to consider exemptions. The Mexican law does not.

Mexico's National Commission for Human Rights has the power - and the obligation - to overturn this law. It must do so, to preserve the free expression rights of the Mexican people.
