I have been asking for cross-country data on India's "English advantage" even in IT, but have yet to see anyone come up with it.

Perhaps this table will conclusively establish this "advantage."

Rank by country of programmers in different areas.
All these countries study programming and algorithms using their mother tongues. Almost none of these use English-medium.

Silicon Valley is not the world. And if India's "English advantage" is so great, where is the Silicon Valley and trillion $ market cap IT companies from India?

Imagine if you took per capita population numbers, how much further back India would be.

1.3 billion people producing no significant companies on their own, unlike China? So supply programmers to US. US is not the world btw.

And if you took per capita by total country population, would it still dominate?

Lol. Yeah that was weird. I wouldn't take any of these lists as absolute gospel. But does raise a question on "English advantage" no?

Another list. All the top 20 countries study in their mother tongues, not English.

Language structures thought. e.g. Hungarian, close to Sanskrit, result in mathematical thinking. So do Indian languages. India is destroying minds w/ English-medium.

USA isn't the world, it will be even less dominant with time.

The future will be ruled by a technology elite which has studied in the mother tongues (for best brain development) and communicate via machine translation. India will produce English coolies.

I present data because the Indian mind is obsessed with the lie of "English advantage", has no idea of how the world works.

China today is surpassing the US in AI patents. Studying in Chinese-medium.

Here is what the Google chairman has to say on it:

It has "nothing to do with language"? Prove it.

All studies show Mother tongue education creates better learning, brain development.

Language structures thought. Ancient Indian education had a huge emphasis on vyakaran. The world came to us to learn.

For some reason I find there is a section of self-proclaimed Hindutva people are even more obsessed with English than the seculars.

Is this kind of thinking why BJP has done absolutely nothing for Indian languages?
There are using "average scores" not total numbers. This makes it believable. The average Indian programmer is hardly that good. Chinese hackers run circles around us. My best programming hires in Microsoft came from Russia, spoke little English.

Tiny brain. I hired programmers from Russia, Eastern Europe. Most spoke little or no English. They'd pick up functional English over time. Brains are much harder to grow.

Mother tongue education grow brains; one can learn other languages to communicate.
(Link to data source is in 2nd tweet in the thread)

The "belief" in English in India is like a religious belief. It is not based on any real evidence or study.

Because any study shows the exact opposite—that English medium is killing brain development.

Learn about Levenshtein distance between languages. These dialects are very close and mutually intelligible, the distance is small. It is *much* easier for these children to pick up Hindi than English. That said, primary ed should use these dialects.

I'm proving that "English medium" is not at all needed, in fact it is a disadvantage. English medium kills comprehension and talent, it impedes brain development for most Indian children.

With mother tongue as medium, they can learn English as needed.

Even in the USA, graduate schools are filled with immigrants whose first language is not English. They've driven the US technical edge.

As India destroys talent with English-medium, it will lose the #IndianLanguage advantage of early childhood.

50% of PhD's in the US are now foreign born, with mother tongues different from English. Domination in science and engineering (S&E) related fields is even higher.

And despite "English advantage" China provided a higher % of Ph.D.s in S&E than India.

There is little evidence that English-medium is an advantage for India. But there's lots of evidence of #EnglishLiability.

India's #EnglishApartheid system destroys talent, prevents access to higher and technical education, kills creativity, self-respect.
Because English-medium in India kills creativity and understanding, its continued propagation by government policy will take India further and further behind.

Indian people have been saddled with #EnglishLiability.

You can notice cognitive difficulties of children going to English-medium schools in India.

Now imagine if your child was going to a Chinese-medium school, where neither parents nor children know the language. This is what we're doing to rural children.

The elite answer is "let them eat cake." They will all learn English, that is the solution. They attack my advocacy for equal-opportunity for #Indianlanguages as elitist.

Hear from a girl from small-town India, with 10 years of English-medium schooling.

@myogiadityanath
