Today I reviewed 4 personal Statements for prospective Grad school applicants and I have the following to say:

#AcademicTwitter @AcademicChatter
@MomentsWithBren
@Oludeewon
@ritapurity
@HelloPhD
@jdhallphd
1. An astonishing personal statement is not supposed to exceed 1000words except if otherwise stated. Do not stress your reader with irrelevant stories
2. Remember that you don’t have to be make your story sympathetic. Your reviewers are usually business minded and wants the best candidate not the most pitiable candidate
3. Why should you mention names of professors when they do not have a profile online? I feel you can just say “My undergraduate project supervisor”. You mention names when it is reknowned. Eg. If I am supervised by @ritapurity, @KASchindler27 or @sagardkhare, etc, I must mention.
4. I have said this severally, you are not in a literature competition(be simple but professional) why add too many unimportant words and phrases? I reduced 300 words to 130 words. That’s how much detailed the applicant was.
5. Always remember this, your story is to sell yourself. If I cannot see the connection in your story, what about your application reviewers that have about 20-50 applications to review?

Think before submitting, your application fee matters.

Goodluck guys
