New paper on #EnergyPoverty and #TransportPoverty with the brilliant @CaitHRobin just published in Energy Research & Social Science doi.org/10.1016/j.erss…

Thread on the main findings...
This is one of those collaborations-that-had-to-happen. England provides modelled estimates of #FuelPoverty for low-level geographies, which is pretty unique. And @CaitHRobin has analysed that data in depth, in this paper...
England also has excellent geodata on car use, motor fuel consumption, accessibility & income.

In my @TranspPoverty research I had used it to map vulnerability to fuel price increases. Which is a sort of transport equivalent of domestic energy poverty
So we thought: what about the overlap between transport- and domestic-energy poverty? This is something that has drawn some research attention in France - where they see energy poverty as including both domestic & transport energy - but not outside of it
The French use the term "double vulnérabilité énergetique" (or "précarité énergétique") to refer to household or areas with both domestic + transport energy poverty.

The first occurrence I'm aware of is in this local authority report from 2007(!)
alterrebourgognefranchecomte.org/_depot_alterre…
[as an aside: I wish more English-speaking researchers read French research. And I wish more French researchers published in English... There's so much to learn from each other]
So we looked at "double energy vulnerability" in England. We found that domestic & transport energy poverty overlap in up to 6% of neighbourhoods (ca. 3 million residents). Typically it's isolated, rural neighbourhoods (away from gas and public transport networks?)
...at the same time, we find that almost 50% of English neighbourhoods have higher-than-median values for at least two of the indicators we considered. So energy poverty is quite pervasive, if you consider all of its multiple dimensions (including transport!) [ENDS]
