*Thread* On the anniversary of the #1953coup in #Iran, I had a quick look at how Israeli papers at the time covered Mosaddeq's ouster. The morning after, it was on the front page of most papers:

- @Haaretz: "Persian Army Topples Mosaddeq Regime" 1/
#ایران
#کودتای۲۸مرداد
Leftist papers took a harder line:

Kol Haam (Voice of the Nation) called it a "Reactionary Military Coup in Iran", saying "American imperialists" were behind Mosaddeq's replacement Zahedi. It also alleged that Zahedi was a "long-time collaborator with the Nazis". 2/
A comment piece in 'Al Hamishmar highlighted the "weakness of the progressive camp" in Iran amid tensions between the National Front and Tudeh. It said that the "tearing to shreds" of Hossein Fatemi spelled trouble for the "forces of progress" in the country. 3/
Another comment piece in Haaretz on 21 August downplayed the NF's strength. It said it was "not an organised party" but that it had "a certain influence over the usual protesting public in the capital" & that the it had "no real power outside the walls of the Majlis". 4/
Daily @MaarivOnline gave some space to a Jewish angle, saying that 130 Jews had left Iran for Israel on the eve of the coup and that they were on their way to the country via Turkey. 5/
Finally, something a little lighter for Hebrew speakers. The more-right wing Herut newspaper published a satirical letter from Tehran. It mocked Ayatollah Kashani as "Kishkeshani" (the babbler) and joked that Mosaddeq had tried to "faint to save the situation". 6/
Obviously there's lots of context to be added here, but this is just a quick rifling through the press headlines in the couple of days after. All of the clipping are from the @NLIsrael's online press archives. // End
