The very literal calm before the storm at Fastnet Rock Lighthouse. That 5 knots is about 9 km/h. #StormEllen
Slight up tick in wind now, 10 knots is about 18 km/p. #StormEllen
The winds increasingly again at the Fastnet Rock with those 22 knots coming at 40 km/h.
Winds reaching 36 knots or 66 km/h now in West Cork. #StormEllen
Yikes! 54 knots is 100 km/h now at one of Ireland's most exposed lighthouses. #StormEllen
As reported, #StormEllen as moved further east along the southern coast. The winds at the Fastnet have largely remained the same now for over an hour and will likely not rise any further.

🌉🚛Hello. So, the landbridge has appeared in the news a good deal this week due to Brexit, which was kicked off by @SiCarswell's article last Monday on it.

🧵I’d like to explore some of core issues around it with a thread 1/

irishtimes.com/news/ireland/i…
🤨What is the landbridge?

🚚🚢🛣️It involves businesses accessing Britain's port and road networks in order to move trade to and from the European continent, e.g.:

🇮🇪🇬🇧🇫🇷

Dublin - Heysham/Holyhead/Liverpool - Dover - Calais
Rosslare - Fishguard/Pembroke - Dover - Calais

2/ Image
Why do businesses do this?

⏲️One simple issue: time. Its takes c. 20 hours to go from Dublin - Calais, a journey of c. 800km that takes you right to the core of EU's Single Market.

Combine this with frequent ferry sailings and a stable road network, its a winning formula.

.@vonderleyen opens her first State of the Union address to the @Europarl_EN as President of the @EU_Commission by thanking healthcare workers across the EU for their bravery during the ongoing #COVID19 pandemic. #SOTEU Image
🩺🇪🇺And UvdL states her first policy proposal: as a result of the pandemic she recommends the need to "build a stronger European health union" and also to look at health competencies in the Conference on the Future of Europe.

#SOTEU #SOTEU2020 #StrongerTogetherEU
🇪🇺Interesting for #SocialRights from UvdL.

💶🧑‍💼👩‍🏭👩‍💼👷‍♀️👨‍🌾UvdL will be putting forward a framework for facilitating more EU workers have access to a minimum wage across the bloc.

🇪🇺🇬🇧I've written this piece as fisheries and Brexit are back in the news.

🎣Coming from a fishing community, that I'm dearly missing during #COVID19, many will be worried over Brexit.

🧵But why is that? A thread for your consideration! 1/
Two EU fishery principles are shaping Brexit talks:

1: Equal conditions of access: since 1970 any Member State vessel can (generally) access waters of another.

It was done before the 1973 accession as original EEC members wanted continued access to 🇩🇰🇮🇪🇳🇴🇬🇧 fish rich waters. 2/
As a result, the 🇮🇪 fishing industry relies on 🇬🇧waters to catch 60% of its mackerel🐟 and 40% of its prawns🦐.

The same is repeated across the 🇪🇺, where other fleets such as 🇧🇪🇩🇰🇫🇷🇩🇪🇳🇱🇪🇸 rely on accessing those fish rich waters of 🇬🇧, and 🇮🇪. 3/

🚢Whow. This is such welcome news for 🇮🇪@PortofCork and the wider Munster region, as 🇧🇪@Port_Zeebrugge is right at the core of Europe's port and transport networks.

⚓️Between #COVID19 and #Brexit, we need our maritime routes working for us.

I'm delighted with this news.

🇮🇪🇪🇸Back in February Brittany Ferries had ended its Cork - Santander sailing, which had started in June 2018, would instead change to a Rosslare Europort - Bilbao service.

The first of many sailings on the new freight service by CLdN from 🇮🇪@PortofCork to 🇧🇪@Port_Zeebrugge.

An important addition on Ireland's maritime corridor to the 🇪🇺EU.

I'm over the moon with my selection of birthday cards that have arrived in the post :)

I'm keeping them all by my laptop to cheer me up as I work from home :) Image
I share my birthday with:

Isabella I of Castile

Jack Nicholson
John Waters (the director...)

But also with #EarthDay and its turns 50 today.

Here, my colleagues in @EMInternational highlight the EU's commitments to environmentalism:
