1) IHE colleagues with #remotelearning students-it's imp to reach out to students in states affected (or who will be) by #CaliforniaWildfires #TropicalStormLaura #HurricaneMarco. It may not be something you're accustomed to doing unless you live in the same area/are affected too.
2) Having supported #onlinestudents through many natural & human made disasters, we've found it helps to reach out to students *proactively* to let them know we care & to share our contact info, encourage them to reach out if we can be of any help, & to ask them to check in...
3) to let us know how they're doing (or ask a family member or friend contact us if they cannot). We email them first & follow up w. a call if we don't hear back. We also ask them to provide alternate contact info.
4) We then check in periodically to see what we can do to help out and to see how they're doing. In my school, I reach out (I'm program director) initially using a list our exec coordinator or student support services provides.
5) Some students may not have updated their contact info or may be living somewhere else temporarily - so it helps to ask if they're in any of these areas (though you'll prob find out if you ask them to share their bios as many do the first week of class).
6) I am so sorry for all affected (and who will be) & am hoping they remain safe and well.
