#uxaustralia #uxaustralia2020
The carrot and the stick, get them to do it and make them think it's their idea, give bonuses to the top 10% fire the bottom 10%.

Traditional forms of motivation.
Motivation scientists have found out, that we are doing it all wrong.
If you're unable to motivate people to participate in your workshop session you will not get anything from your research.
Extrinsic motivation: People do something for a reward or avoid punishment.

Intrinsic motivation: People do an activity because they are interested and enjoy it. It's what we want people to feel in the workshops. It's the best way to motivate people.
Self Determination Theory is about activating intrinsic motivation.
You need to create an environment to activate intrinsic motivations.

Autonomy — I know how to do this

Competence — I know I can do this well

Relatedness — I can connect to others, I can connect this to my world
How to build in Autonomy:

Pre-work, agenda and aims

Provide instructions in a variety of ways: audio, visual, and kinesthetic

Covert training (icebreakers)
How to build Competence:

Embed positive feedback as you go through tasks

Track milestones

Talk to people by their name, get some idea of who knows what before getting into the room so you can ask questions to specific people.
How to build relatedness:

Establish team culture — you get a quick insight into the organisational culture and rituals. It improves personal accountability

Instil regular playbacks — pause to share after each activity

Connect each activity to the workshop aims
Melissa is sharing a story about how Righteous Pups (righteouspups.org.au) use self determination theory with at risk teens through their autism dog training program.
