todd is trapped on a drone in the sky. which is not exactly what i expected when i ended the last thread talking about character development

i love her
sometimes it's like that
there's a direction this could have gone, which would be so much more obvious- bojack saying "eww, gross," and then intentionally giving hollyhock the worst lesson. i always feel the ghost of a worse show in scenes like this, and i think that's what makes it so impressive
oh god here we go
oh my GOD
;LKJASDF;LKJASDGLJKHWHLJK

holy shit
every single celebrity in this show has their own face recreated all over their own house
this style is relentlessly charming
oh my god he's so fucking wise
damn judah
holy shit this sequence is really good
this season's already gone way more into the subjectivity of specific characters, and it's made everything so much more complicated in a really interesting way
fuck you
they got zach braff to play himself
oh good
i'm starting to feel self-conscious about how often my tweets are just an image of a line out of context with the words "oh my god" but oh my god

i love it when we see different angles of bojack's face
we don't need to "get him," let's just tie him up someplace where he can't hurt us anymore with his dangerous ideas

so now you can have other animals stitched together???
such an unbelievably good line
...is this a fanny & alexander reference?
there have been hints of animal breed being signals of ethnicity, but this is the first time in the show this kind of thing's had any material cultural consequence. very interesting development
what the hell
fuck you
i see we're getting a new twist on an american tail
this is art
OH NOOOOO
PRINCESS CAROLYN :'(

season 4 review: WHY HOW WHY AGH
season 4 was just. nonstop pathos for basically everyone. wowza. last couple episodes were clearly the work of a team at the height of their ability. god damn
i had no intention of going through all of season 4 in one day but it just kinda happened.
i think the most notable shift in season 4 is codifying species as a cipher for ethnic heritage. we've had hints of it particularly with labrador peninsula, but even the ocean city was like "yeah, what else do you expect, they're fish"
having mouse holidays be explicitly anti-cat gets us into racial allegory territory that the series so far has worked *very* hard to avoid. i'll be very curious to see if season 5 develops this thread at all or if they just leave it at that. kiiiinda hoping for the latter?
bojack works because what type of animal you are doesn't seem to have a huge impact on the life you lead. species doesn't have a direct correlation to class, etc etc. part of the joy of this series is that it's not beastars. they can just make people be animals for a joke.
this isn't a criticism so much as recognition of a narrative hazard. spend enough time in a universe like this and writers will want to start exploring its contours. this makes for good writing but it can also lead to a snowballing of factors that can distract from the main theme
so far they've done a good job of keeping these bits of story quarantined. like we have an explanation for fried chicken, we have labrador peninsula, but with the mouse holiday you're looking at something cultural, something systemic, and that requires a lot of unpacking
alright, one season left. i don't know anything about it except that it involves a callout of some kind. can't wait

bojack horseman season 3 review thread BEGINS.

it's genuinely existentially VERY upsetting that bojack isn't in his own movie. this is a fascinating plot thread for a show about the fragility of screen-based identities

CHAZ (the capitol hill autonomous zone here in seattle) is an incomprehensible contradiction whose existence seems to have been willed into being through gumption and determination alone, and the result is something beautiful, fragile, and potentially world-changing.
yesterday, CHAZ was a ghost town whose existence seemed memetic at *best*. but even in the few hours we were there, we witnessed in real time protesters negotiating with city employees, forming committees, making plans to transform this into something real.
SPD's retreat from the precinct building seemed largely to be a trap, like they expected protesters to burn it down so they could manufacture their own private reichstag fire. instead folks seized the territory and invented CHAZ out of whole cloth.

it says a lot about how dense knives out is in terms of visual storytelling that i didn't even notice this obvious subjectivity between linda and walt's separate intro montages until the third viewing
of course the first we see of marta in a flashback she's *literally* framed with a halo
then there's the different named character introductions, which i'm gonna go through one by one in this thread. linda's is the first we get. note the distance between her and the center of the circle of knives.

a fascinating aspect of rick and morty is it's a show that seems to resent the fact that it exists and hates its audience for wanting to connect with it in any meaningful way.

if that were intentional, it would almost justify the show's existence.
there was an anarchic joy to r&m when it started, but the problem with subversive shows is that the longer they go on the more formulaic they become. and booooooooy howdy is r&m formulaic these days.
i keep watching because it has a genuine creativity that a lot of scifi tv lacks. its "everything is possible" premise leads to so many cool ideas. how often do you get intelligent nonbipedal alien monsters in popular scifi? i love it!

too bad it NEVER engages with them.
