BIG NEWS: A House committee is voting on my South Asian Heart Health Awareness & Research Act TODAY!

This bipartisan legislation will raise awareness about the alarming rate of heart disease in South Asian communities while investing in strategies to reverse this deadly trend.
As the first South Asian American woman ever elected to the House of Representatives, I know how urgent this is for families across the country. South Asians in the United States continue to experience a dramatic rise in heart disease.
South Asian Americans also have a much greater chance of having a heart attack before age 50 and have emerged as the ethnic group with the highest prevalence of Type 2 diabetes, which is a leading cause of heart disease. Unfortunately, a similar trend is happening globally.
My legislation addresses this by directing the HHS Secretary to create grants at the CDC to provide funding for community groups involved in South Asian heart health promotion and to develop culturally appropriate materials to promote heart health in the South Asian community.
It also directs the HHS Secretary to fund grants through the National Institutes of Health to conduct research on cardiovascular disease and other heart ailments among communities disproportionately affected by heart disease, such as South Asian populations living in the US.
Finally, this bill develops a clearinghouse and web portal of information on heart health research.

I'm urging members of the Committee on Energy and Commerce to PASS this bipartisan legislation that has the support of more than a dozen medical groups.

Millions of people have lost their jobs, housing, and health care during COVID-19. We must respond with policies that match the scale of this unprecedented crisis. The new Republican bill in the Senate FAILS to do that.

RT to share 6 reasons why:
To help people withstand this crisis, we must renew expanded unemployment assistance by the FULL $600 a week.

✅The House plan does this

❌The Republican bill fails to do this (it actually slashes benefits in half, which then expire in December)
We must get stimulus checks out to people across this country so they can put food on the table, make ends meet, and pay their bills.

✅My proposal does this with recurring monthly checks

❌The Republican bill fails to do this (NO new checks would be sent out)

"The President was also scoffing at the Postal Service, calling it a joke, while a large number of our employees were dying daily as they struggled to perform our mission, during a deadly pandemic."

-David C. Williams, Former Vice Chairman of the USPS Board of Governors
"We are now seeing infrastructure cuts that are destroying the Postal Service’s commitment to service delivery standards and the beginning of the price increases that the President threatened."
"The White House has admitted that steps are being taken to assure that Americans cannot vote in the next Presidential election without exposing themselves to disease at the height of a deadly pandemic."

If you're going to issue passionate statements supporting racial justice and Black lives, STOP taking checks from CBP. Walk the talk. Don't allow your business to enable Trump's abhorrent attacks on immigrants and those powerfully protesting racism.

Some examples ⬇
Booz Allen Hamilton wants to be "a sustained catalyst for change in the fight against racial injustice."

But they have taken $12,480,644 in contracts with CBP since September 2018.
McKinsey & Co. says they will "use our skills productively to help our local communities break down unacceptable barriers to equality and opportunity.”

But they have been using their skills to help CBP, receiving $6,762,299 in contracts since August 2017.

🚨BREAKING: I just introduced the Paycheck Recovery Act with 92 co-sponsors! Our legislation will deliver working people immediate relief and certainty while ending mass unemployment and matching the scale of this crisis.

RT to share5⃣things people should know about HR 6918:
1⃣The Paycheck Recovery Act keeps workers connected to their paychecks by covering the wages of those earning up to $90,000.

And at a time when 37 million workers have lost their jobs, it also ensures businesses can rehire those laid-off or furloughed since March 1.
2⃣HR 6918 is not just an economic recovery plan; it’s a public health plan too. At a time when at least 27 million people have lost health care during #COVID19, this bill also covers the costs of returning workers to their employer-sponsored benefits, including health insurance.

People are facing an unprecedented crisis—one that directly impacts their jobs, health care, and daily lives. We must deliver relief, certainty, and a response that matches the scale of the crisis.

While the Heroes Act contains some good components, it fails to achieve that:
I believe we can and must choose differently. That's why I voted no. I believe we must put forward a package that:
🔵Gets paychecks back to workers
🔵Ensures everyone has health care
🔵Helps all businesses to survive this crisis
🔵Protects the rights of workers to get pensions
More than 36 million have already filed for unemployment and 40% of households earning less than $40,000 lost a job. Mass unemployment is a policy choice and we must choose differently.

But this bill does not keep workers in their jobs and guarantee the certainty of paychecks.

In the past few weeks, @ICEgov has found cases of #COVID in immigration detention centers in 13 states & done little to respond. That’s why I, w/ @SenBooker, am proud to introduce the Federal Immigrant Release for Safety and Security Together (FIRST) Act.
The #FIRSTAct calls for the immediate release of people in detention centers who are under 21, over 50, or have a vulnerable health condition.
It also calls for ICE to review the custody of ALL immigrants in detention in order to lower the detention population & to release those that don't pose a risk to public safety. Social distancing in a detention center is an oxymoron. #FIRSTAct
