"If they are really going in this direction, I think we have to break the negotiation and rebuild trust in their observance of the law."
Consternation across Europe as Britain torpedoes its international reputation

"We are united and we are absolutely clear that whatever happens we will be united in protecting the interests of Ireland," @RobertaMetsola told me.
I didn't have room to put her whole quote in the article so here's what she said - worth reading.
I spoke about the EU reaction to the zany developments in London and women in leadership in Brussels as Mairead McGuinness is picked to be Ireland's next commissioner over on Inside Politics soundcloud.com/irishtimes-pol…
None of the arbitration options open to the EU - - whether fines or permission to retaliate - - will prevent a hardening of the border across Ireland if Britain is determined to bring it about, writes @RonanMcCrea

Why is a Native American lacrosse team tweeting as Gaeilge?
Ireland has pulled out of the International World Games to give their space to the Iroquois Nationals, who represent the people who invented the game, and to whom it is sacred rte.ie/amp/1163463/
They made the new green white & orange version of their logo their avi ☺️
The Iroquois Nationals were initially excluded "on the grounds that they were not a sovereign nation, without an Olympic Committee".
When this was overturned - if a place could be found - Ireland pulled out

Do you want to hear about one of the most excruciating, culture shock debacles I've ever experienced in my life
Ok so I was moving into a new place in the Netherlands a few years back and introduced myself to some of the neighbours as you do.
Few days later, neighbour approaches me on the street.
"Oh hi" she says. "So on Saturday we're having a party. Afternoon thing, some friends and family, we'll have the barbecue going, casual enough."

Habemus papam! #EUCO
"We did it. Europe is strong, Europe is united," declares an astonishingly energetic @eucopresident after a leaders pulled another all-nighter.
"These were of course difficult negotiations in difficult times for all European citizens, a marathon that ended in success for all 27"
"The overall volume of €750 billion has been kept, grants are a little bit less with €390 billion," says Angela Merkel. "That we needed so many days shows that we've come from different vantage points but what matters is we came together." #EUCO

The complacent and blundering Dutch response to Covid-19 is laid out in this massive investigative long read by @DerkStokmans and @Markla94.
nrc.nl/nieuws/2020/06…
Some details:
- due to restricted testing, the official figure of infections was 614 when an estimated 67,000-95,000 were infected
- national test and trace was calamitously abandoned on March 12, with the illogical justification there were too many infections to test in Brabant
- despite warnings of shortages, the health ministry declined to order face masks in February
- Prime Minister Mark Rutte shocked members of the national crisis management team by announcing in a speech to the nation that the country would aim for 'herd immunity'

There is huge intrigue in Italy at the moment about why Germany's coronavirus death rate is lower.
Various professors are speculating, without evidence, that it's because Germany is counting deaths differently. That's now being spread around as fact.
Truth is, we don't know yet..
What do we know?
1. Italy's testing is limited to the famous or the very ill due to capacity constraints. This raises the apparent death rate. Germany's is comparatively lower because its much wide testing captures many more mild and asymptomatic case.
2. It's possible people in Italy are sicker because their outbreak started earlier. Germany's fatalities may rise in time.
3. In the centre of the outbreak in Italy there aren't enough ventilators for people who can't breathe. Doctors are open about this meaning more people die.
