I really can’t get over how disrespectful UGA's plan to put up to 23,000 people in Sanford stadium is to all of the people in Athens who have sacrificed by skipping funerals, weddings, birthdays, etc, in efforts to get local covid numbers under control... *THREAD* #CFB
Which they currently are not...and are getting worse. The positivity rate of symptomatic cases tested at the University Health Center is 50%. The positivity rate of minimal surveillance testing of non-symptomatic UGA community members is over 8%! 2/
#UGA is reporting 1417 new cases in the last week alone. Since students have come back to Athens, Athens now holds the #5 spot of cities NATIONALLY where new cases are increasing fastest. 3/
Since students have come back to Athens, Clarke County now holds the honor of being the 14th county NATIONALLY with the highest number of recent cases per resident, at 720 cases per 100,000 - within the last 7 days, that’s jumped to 924/100k. 4/
The current guidance says that if students test positive, they should not be sent home where they could potentially spread the virus, yet those cases are not even being counted in ACC, so the situation on the ground could be even worse than the data indicates. 5/
The flip side of that is that people traveling to Athens for the games are potentially bringing the virus into a small county and further worsening the situation, or contracting the virus and carrying it back home with them. 6/
Let's hope there isn't a crush of infected folks requiring hospitalization in the Athens area. There simply isn't the capacity in the county to treat a large surge of #COVID19 patients. The same can be said for fans that potentially carry the disease back to their small towns. 7/
Any way I look at it, the decision to allow thousands to come and mix and mingle in what is an indisputable hot spot for the coronavirus seems irresponsible at best. All in the pursuit of the almighty dollar and the entertainment of folks that don't actually need it. 8/
There is simply so much that we do not know about this virus and how it impacts people of all ages, from myocarditis, lung destruction, cognitive and sight issues, and I could go on. We simply do not know how dangerous this virus is and the impacts could effect us for decades. 9/
Add in the fact that 40% of deaths from #Covid_19 are related to cardiovascular complications such as blood clots and strokes, and the disease starts to look like a vascular infection instead of a purely respiratory one. 10/ elemental.medium.com/coronavirus-ma…
Do not come at me with "How many deaths?" trash. I've lost 3 people to #COVID19, as have 100s of thousands of others. Each of those lives lost shattered someone's world. They were loved by family and friends. Those human beings matter way more than you watching football. 11/
I don't know how to convince you to care about other people. 12/
We do not need #CollegeFootball & we certainly do not need fans in the stands to watch it. My 5 year old is learning about the difference b/w NEEDS & WANTS in kindergarten. She clearly understands the concept. I wish more grown ups could see it as clearly as she does. #GoDAWGS

Yeah, I’ve got some thoughts on that. *Thread*

Times, they are a-changin’.

It seems this period of consensual hallucinations is coming to an end thanks to #COVID19.

Sports are flailing as they attempt to find a way back to the games, but especially collegiate sports. 2/
With the Ivy League canceling all Fall sports, the Big10 moving to play conference games only (if at all), and the ACC delaying the start of all Fall sports until Sept. 1st, it seems the writing is in the wall. 3/
