THREAD: Trump compares himself to Churchill? That's bold. But here's the irony: the story of Churchill's "Keep Calm and Carry On" slogan and poster is also a myth. It never happened. The poster was never released during WWII. Follow along. It is my favorite resiliency story. 1/
The poster was mass produced in 1939 as part of the WWII civilian defense effort. But it never really made the light of day. Only a few copies were ever seen. It wasn't until 2000 when it was discovered by Stuart Manley, a used bookseller from Northumberland, England, 2/
as he was rummaging through old boxes. He put one up on the wall; customers loved it; a few articles were written; and "all hell broke lose," said Manley as it captured the world. What happened? The British War Council never released the posters. "Freedom Is In Peril" and 3/
"Your Courage, your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution Will Bring Us Victory" won out. I know not as pithy. But, why was the "Keep Calm And Carry On" message held throughout the war, even by Churchill. Nobody knows the exact reason, but one theory was simple: It was b.s. A lie. 4/
"Keep Calm and Carry On" is NOT what Churchill would need from the citizens. It was not what was an honest thing for citizens to hear. Churchill would need Londoners to engage and sacrifice. He needed them to understand this was a war for their lives. It was a fight. 5/
He needed the men to go to war. The women to work the factories. And their children to be sent, often alone, to the countryside. To fight an enemy isn't some mental Zen or soothing lies from leaders. It isn't drinking more tea. A war effort isn't calm, and he knew that. 6/
Trump doesn't really care about the Keep Calm story. But it is important to relate today given Trump's statements about calm. A true leader -- like Churchill -- does not pretend that the enemy can be calmed away.
And that's the story of the slogan that never happened.
THE END

THREAD: I know what I'm doing. Some reactions to this tweet -- which I thought was hilarious -- suggest I'm a hypocrite and my daughter selfish. I'm inclined to ignore but realize a lot of you have bought into binary notion of COVID-19 response that Trump is selling. Don't. 1/
So maybe it would be helpful to explain, again. We are all so impatient with each other. And the fact that I will do so does not minimize my utter rage that I have to do so (or the disruption that led my daughter to not go back to college).
2/
We are in the risk mitigation phase. Per Fauci, the risk will not be eliminated at best until end of 2021, if then. I feel my role here is to be brutally honest (must be) and advise how we move forward. We know much more now. There are safe things to do, unsafe things to do. 3/

THREAD/BACKGROUND: It is important to understand what @jonkarl has shown here. What is being described is a Bulletin to the SLTT community (state, local, territorial and tribal governments). Essentially, what @DHSgov normally does is provide information to the homeland. 1/
Quickly on experience: I was a state homeland security advisor so received (was consumer of) these and I was an Assistant Secretary at DHS working with the SLTT stakeholders. Classification was always FOUO (For Official Use Only) meaning that it wasn't secret in any real sense 2/
A good academic researcher could have figured it out, but it is something DHS would want its partners to know (others I remember were about the rise of recreational drones near airports or increase in Fentanyl.) There was always an expectation information would be public; 3/

🔥🔥🔥WEEKLY DATA UPDATE ON MASKING
New data on the masking efforts one (damn) state/city/co./institution at a time we've been pushing in absence of national policy.

By Aug. 1, if current policies hold, nearly 75% of US population will be under some masking mandate. 1/
First, a background on the effort to push masking policies in cities/states/etc, the good data people, and what is being monitored.

And raw data website @UW and covidtracking.com

2/
Major developments this week: Wisconsin to Level 2 (first change for state since May 13 court ruling but the Supreme Court is hostile so standby); Michigan ratchets up; Vermont (who predicted!) expansion. 3/

Thread on the comprehensive manufacturing and distribution plan released this morn from @amprog @TopherSpiro and @ZekeEmanuel. It is everything you need to know about what lies ahead. A vaccine never saved a life; only a vaccination has. Some key points: 1/
A)This seems overwhelming. But the only way to get order to the chaos is through this kind of gap planning. It’s actually calming: what will we need, what do we have, and how do we fill that gap. A needs assessment is the only way to move forward. 2/
B)The gaps are wide but they are known. That too is good. There are also separate ethical issues related to distribution order but some already set (first responders first!). This plan is about the how and it builds off planning from H1N1 and capacity at local and state level. 3/

THREAD #HurricaneHanna and #Covid. Some data based on Sat. night briefings. 2020 Hurricane Season was forecast to be well above average and, so far, it’s living up to the fears. WE ARE ALREADY AS FAR DOWN THE NAME LIST AS WE WOULD BE IN LATE-SEPT IN AVERAGE HURRICANE SEASON. 1/
Hanna and Gonzalo broke records for being earliest named Atlantic storms of their respective place in the alphabet. Hanna was 8th named storm in the 2020 Atlantic hurricane. Hurricane Douglas is threatening Hawaii; tropical "waves" heading towards PR and Gulf could get worse. 2/
There has been so much public, NGO (disclosure, I help atRed Cross) and private planning for a Covid/hurricane horror. That is good. And those plans are now activated. Whether they are executed well is another question. And everyone is tired and cranky so there's that. 3/

Masking! For months, those of us on outside -- scientists, MDs, response planners, health experts, etc -- knew that there would be no national policy. And so we worked, in our different ways, to push for a Covid strategy one (damn) state, city, institution, company at a time 1/
That includes a national masking policy, which we won't get, but which appears to be happening one (damn) state at a time (or jurisdiction), etc. Here was what I laid out mid-June that was looking to be such a July policy.

2/
Its all a mess and not ideal, but you kind of have to work with what you got. And as it became clear that we were heading towards wide swaths of the US being under masking orders -- one (damn) place at a time -- it wasn't nothing. 3/
