Thanks to Trump's appointees, 11th Circuit just upheld the Florida GOP's racist poll tax barring nearly 800,000 people, 43% of whom are Black, from voting even though FL makes it impossible for many to even find out how much they owe in court fines/fees dailykos.com/story/2020/7/1…
Republican-appointed judges are partisans in all but name. A veritable poll tax in the year 2020 even though the 24th Amendment bans explicit poll taxes AND "other" taxes producing the same effect.

Vote if you can, but the GOP has ensured this will not be a free & fair election
A majority of those subject to the Florida GOP's poll tax owe at least $500, & a many owe even more than that Black voters are disenfranchised by this poll tax at 3 times their share of the population & far more than whites electionsmith.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/jones-…
Of course, Florida GOP passed laws making future initiatives harder after voters used a 2018 initiative to end lifetime felony disenfranchisement. GOP has done this in many states after pro-democracy measures passed in recent years dailykos.com/stories/2019/7…
An outright lie by the GOP judges. The amendment voters passed by 2-1 to end lifetime felony voter disenfranchisement made no mention of court costs. "All terms of their sentence including parole or probation." Payment NOT emphasized like parole/probation

Florida uses predatory fines & fees to fund its court system, & they've made it impossible for many people who've served their felony sentences to even find out how much $ they owe. A lower court struck down this law, but GOP judges reinstated it on appeal dailykos.com/stories/2020/7…

Texas' political geography increasingly favors Dems because nonvoters count in redistricting, but TX GOP has long aimed to draw districts based solely on adult citizens. Even if Dems flip the TX House in November, GOP will control legislative redistricting (but not congressional)

House Dems will pass #DCstatehood today for the 1st time ever. If Dems win the presidency/Senate & nuke the filibuster, it could happen in 2021 with simple majorities. 41 senators are bill sponsors (6 Dems aren't yet), & at least 5 Dems running for top-tier 2020 GOP seats back it
I looked up how many people were counted as residing in the rump District below in the 2010 census & it was about 165, but that doesn't mean they have their legal residence/voter registration there, & regardless, Congress could assign rump District's electoral votes as it pleases
How the #DCstatehood bill tackles the 23rd Amendment issue & the handful of people who could be considered as residing in the rump District around the mall & federal buildings. The 23rd gives Congress the power to assign the District's electoral votes

This would be a blow to Wisconsin democracy. GOP legislators won fewer votes than Democrats in 2018 & only kept their majorities because of how they drew the districts. A minority-rule GOP legislature gets their judicial allies to undermine the fairly elected Dem governor's power

There are rumors that the Wisconsin Supreme Court's GOP majority could overturn a 1965 precedent to let Republicans pass new gerrymanders without the Dem governor having veto power. I expect them to do it given their recent displays of extreme partisanship dailykos.com/stories/2019/8…

Big news for Virginia voting access: Gov. Ralph Northam (D) has signed a law adopting automatic voter registration via the DMV. Northam has until midnight tonight to act on several more voting-related bills. This cartogram shows which states have AVR laws. lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp60… Image
Northam also signed laws to:
1—Make Election Day a state holiday
2—Extend E-Day poll closing from 7pm to 8pm
3—Require all votes be cast with voter-verifiable paper trails
4—Count absentee ballots if they're postmarked by E-Day.

Wisconsin's GOP-gerrymandered legislative majority, which won fewer votes than Dems, is asking their 5-2 WI Supreme Court majority to overturn the Dem governor's order to delay tomorrow's court election until it can be held in a safe manner. GOP suppressing votes to win elections

Republicans nationally are watching what's happening in Wisconsin. If a GOP-gerrymandered legislature can get away with stopping the expansion of mail voting & other measures to suppress votes so they can win key elections like this, they'll keep doing it nationally for November
