India is seeing this triad of somewhat contradictory symptoms, and that too, ironically, in the same set of people.
I will call this the EMU triad.
Exaggeration.
Misinformation.
Understatement.
/1
EXAGGERATION.
Initially we did see an exaggerated response. There was a certain amount of fear and panic (which has absolutely disappeared now).
But even now, there's still an exaggerated reaction. The paralyzing social stigma surrounding the infection.
/2
There have been a multitude of reports from all over India. Reports of isolation, harassment and discrimination towards an individual or a family that tested positive for COVID.
It's nothing but a sign of the society becoming hopelessly apathetic towards human suffering.
/3
MISINFORMATION.
Lack of information is better than false information.
"Heat will kill the virus."
"Young people don't get infected."
"My ayurvedic kadha makes me immune to the virus."
My favourite,
"Corona virus is a scam to make money and harvest organs of dead people.
/4
WhatsApp forwards and social media campaigns by activists and self-proclaimed experts are detrimental to the containment of the virus because they largely influence the behaviour of the gullible people. There has to be a check on the spread of such lies.
/5
For example,
I saw a video with a guy claiming that the thermal gun used for measuring temperature causes brain damage.
Another "expert" claims that vaccines, if and when available, will cause mutations and genetic defects in the population.
And people are believing them!
/6
UNDERSTATEMENT
Now, since normal routine has resumed, the looming threat and fear of COVID-19 has apparently disappeared. Protocols initially in place are being flouted left and right.
This callous approach will eventually show it's true colours.
/7
The only reason India hasn't seen a condition like Italy or Spain is because we somehow managed to slow down the initial spread and amp up our resources. We did a good job. Till Now.
Not anymore. At the rate the cases are climbing, if not controlled, a catastrophe awaits.
/8
To the layman:
Whether the official numbers from the government are true or not, whether the government's policy is working or not makes absolutely no difference.
At an individual level, it is YOUR actions that'll determine whether you will remain safe from COVID or not.
/9
People need to come out of this bubble of false self-assurance that COVID-19 is not a threat anymore.
You don't want to wear masks, you don't want social distancing, you don't want to minimize your exposure - because it is Inconvenient?
Let the doctors, epidemiologists, govt expert committees worry about the data from other nations and what it means for India (or any other nation - everything below writing applies to all).
As a layman, here's what you need to do:
1. MASK UP. Cannot stress more. N95 or 3ply surgical. I know not everyone can afford N95. Cover your face with a good quality mask as far as possible.
2. SOCIAL DISTANCING. Yep. Same old "do gaj ki doori".
3. INDOOR VENTILATION. Ensure adequate ventilation indoors at all times.
4. GET VACCINATED. There's all kinds of news, true and false, going around about #Vaccines and #Omicron.
But the bottom-line is Vaccines are still protective. Against death. Against hospitalisation. Get your vaccines - 1st dose or 2nd dose - ASAP.
