1/ From Rabbi Emily Segal - "there is a Jewish tradition that those who die just before Rosh Hashanah are extraordinarily righteous & truly precious to God. We are taught that each Rosh Hashanah it is written who will live and who will die in the year to come... @caffeinatedrav
2/ "So last Rosh Hashanah, it was determined that RBG would die before this next year came to be...God did not want to let this precious, righteous person go... " #RIPRBG#RoshHashanah@caffeinatedrav
3/ "God wanted to cling on to every second of having this person on earth. But, God is God... and God knows that this person's name is not written in the Book of Life for the year to come...So God waits until the very last possible moment of the year... @caffeinatedrav
4/ "on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, to allow the Angel of Death to descend. And finally, that truly righteous person breathes her last breath and her soul departs.” (as beautifully explained by my colleague Rabbi Emily Segal) End @caffeinatedrav
5/ This teaching is from the Talmud. Many of us don't believe in a literal "Book of Life" - but our Torah is written by the way we live. This, I believe is true. RBG had a full Torah - she had justice at her center. I am so grateful. #RBGForever

Thread. The night TFG was elected in 2016, both our young adult sons asked us - are we going to be ok here? My husband said - let’s make sure we all have our passports in order. That’s how clear it was the kind of racism & antisemitism he would stir up
2/ now look what we have: synagogues on high alert, Nazis openly harassing in Orlando, HBCU’s being targeted, hate crimes at the highest levels, our democracy in peril…
3/ let’s not be like the frog slowly boiled & not noticing because it was so gradual — Let’s all stay awake, stand up each time, refuse to get numb. The only guardrails are us, the people. Good morning.
Voting rights needs to be federal. Period. Let’s do what we did when the GOP tried to take away health care. Remember? Call your senators. Tell them to pass Senate bill 1.
Please PLEASE don’t tell me you have GOP senators. Take your power. Use your voice. It does not matter what you think they will do. Blow up the phones. Even if they don’t do what you say, at least you can say you did everything in your power
If you believe in democracy, exercise your rights every chance you get. That includes expressing your opinions whether or not people agree with you. This is so primary. If you don’t speak up, you have already lost.
If you have a Republican Senator I hope you are calling them every day with your opinion on the #impeachment YOUR VOICE MATTERS
Let me clarify: ESPECIALLY if you have a Republican Senator: CALL. it doesn’t matter what you think they will do. What matters is using your voice. That’s what democracy is. If you don’t think your voice counts, we are really lost.
What they care about is public opinion. So use your voice.
In regards to GOP congresspeople feeling afraid for their lives: perhaps you didn't have your grown sons call you the night of the 2016 election, asking if we (as Jews) will be safe here now. Maybe you didn't hear your husband tell the family to get their passports in order /1
2/ just in case we had to flee. Maybe you thought that he couldn't be that bad -- but it was clear to anyone paying attention that he was dangerous. SURELY Jews, Muslims, Latinx, African Americans - we could have told you how terrified we were -
3/ We didn't even know that families would be separated, or that we'd have a pandemic that would be worse bc he couldn't govern - but we KNEW in our bones - from age-old cellular trauma that he was capable of horror
