The opening testimony from at the @WEP_UK members assembly on self ID stated that 'trans women face the same risks from men as women and girls do'....🧐.
The UK is one of the safest EU countries to live. In fact there were no reported transgender murders in the UK at all in 2016. Since the start of the Trans Murder Monitoring project in 2008 there has been on average just under 1 transgender person murdered in the UK each year.
The question we can now ask is whether transgender people at a higher risk of being killed than the average person? The data analysis suggests that they are not.
An estimate of the UK trans population size was published by Gender Identity Research and Education Society (GIRES)
It estimates that 1% of the UK pop. are gender non-conforming. Based on this, the trans murder rate is in fact significantly lower than for the average person
Transwomen are 6 times more likely to commit a crime & 18 times more likely to commit a violent crime compared to female controls.
And Trans women commit crime, including violent crime, at a similar rate as any other males
So what about the prison population? #WEPfactcheck 1 in every 50 male prisoners is a trans woman. This would suggest that they are over represented in the prison population.
James Morton form Scottish Trans Alliance who gave evidence to the @WEP_UK assembly in fact wrote Scottish Prison Policy allowing men to self ID into the female estate whilst in his role as the manager of Scottish Trans Alliance...
In James's writing of this self ID prison policy his Equality Impact Assessment not only incorrectly names the protected characteristics, (gender and gender identity are NOT in the Equality Act 2010) it doesn’t even consider that WOMEN would be affected by this.
Mandu’s failure to facilitate robust evidence based discussions means we are in the laughable position that the Party thinks we can have self ID & protect single-sex spaces.
A fact the UN VAWG rapporteur pointed out in her letter to Nicola Sturgeon last week.
@ManduReid's leadership has will sadly become knownfor dismissing expertise & the majority view of Party members on self ID.
The Party's assembly was clear in its support of single-sex spaces, yet #wep#groundhogday brings back the same tired motion that was rejected previously
Whew! This is Sarah taking over the tweets from our wonderful A. She has done a grand job launching #RespectMySex and speaking to @WEP_UK candidates. Unfortunately, this has also filled our mentions with some grim content... (1/7)
I just want to say thank you to all our feminist sisters slogging it out here in Twitter, it's not always an easy place to be. Nobody wants to be dealing with porn-soaked replies about sex toys whilst making the kids' lunch... (2/7)
Many of us are #VAWG survivors, of course, and being political and opinionated whilst being female is often enough reason to be targeted by rank misogyny. Sometimes even from other women... (3/7)
