THREAD. 🌹 Exhausted after today 😩 but relieved to have won recognition two HUGE victories in court today:

1. Recognition of the centrality of trauma & mental health support for Gaia's inquest (/all survivors). 🙌

2. Something we never thought we'd ask for...
...another delay to the inquest (now due May 2021) which given the current mess is essential to ensure the full & fearless investigation we need.

We are determined to do all in our power to make sure your family never has to stand where we stand today, fighting...
... justice for someone who’s been taken from you and who can never be replaced.

Huge thanks to our amazing legal team incl. @caoilfhionnanna & @HWistrich Sarah and Soohy for all their hard work, also @INQUEST_ORG, @RapeCrisisEandW England & Wales and @centreWJ as well as...

Happy Friday! We hope your day is going great. Following up on last week's #thread on Combating GBV during #COVID19. This week as part of #SexualAssaultAwarenessmonth our #thread touches on the rise of other #harmfulpractices against women during #COVID19 due to the lockdown.
This is a continuation of the conversations we have been having on how the #globalpandemic #covid19 is affecting the lives of girls and young women.
These conversations aim to ensure that we engage a #genderlens response mechanism during global pandemics ensuring the most vulnerable amongst us are not left out in the cold.

THREAD: 8th March.

My sister Sarah Jane would have been 50 years old today.

I speak about her and tell her story in the talk I do about #DomesticAbuse but that doesn’t tell HER story.

Here’s a bit more about her and our family.

1/
We were both adopted from Guernsey. Me in 1966/7 Sarah in 1970.

I’m told (by my birth mother - that’s another story) that Guernsey in the late 60s was more like the 1900s from a morals and development perspective. So being born ‘out of wedlock’ was especially problematic.

2/
Consequently there were a lot of babies adopted off the Channel Islands to the mainland - due in some part to the transient nature of employment in the holiday and travel industries. (I was the result of a holiday romance and we found out that Sarah was also a teen-pregnancy).

Excited to kick off Eyala's #AfrifemsInAction interview series!

I ask 10 questions to an African #feminist about an initiative they've been involved in: how it came about, how it's helped her grow as a feminist, & how the Eyala community can support it.

eyala.blog
To start, @_Nanzunga_ tells me all
about #TakeItToTheStreetsMalawi: the great leadership of @ulemuhannah & @YFN265, how it felt like to protest against #VAWG, and how we can all support the initiative going forward.

Read, comment and share widely!

Eyala family: if you are involved in/know of an #Afrifem-led initiative that's not getting enough attention...

THREAD: The book of Ruth

Begins as if it's going to be a story about a man:

'In the days when the judges judged there was a famine in the land, and a MAN of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, HE and HIS wife and HIS two sons.'
Immediately *famine* & *sojourn* co-occur

as they do in Genesis 12:10--the 1st time either term occurs in the Bible.

So we're in an Abraham-like situation.

A man is on the move, with his family, away from famine, to sojourn in another country.
Strangely enough he's leaving Bethlehem, which means 'house of bread' (beth = house; lehem = bread).

We have 2 reasons to think names in this book bear significant meanings:

Leaving Basel - yesterday was a huge career highlight for me. Getting to be on the same stage with #HIVheroes of mine & talk #HIV collaboration & activism. Such an honour! @BR999 @SaldanhaVP @gareththomas14 @JoseM_Zuniga @NazProjectLdn @DanielNag3l @ejaf @IAPAC @UNAIDS #EACS2019 ImageImage
It was a great opportunity to highlight some collaborative projects that I’ve been able to work on. First up @4Mproject - a peer support network of mentor mothers living with HIV. Shout out @angelina_namiba @mbewe_rebecca @SalamanderTrust 🎉🎉 Image
And secondly Soul Sisters, a project with @NazProjectLdn @BartsHealthHIV @PHE_uk training #VAWG staff to signpost women who are experiencing domestic abuse for sexual health services & #HIV prevention. Shout out to @ChristabelMK @strachansophie @LoraineBacchus @Imkaan 🎉🎉 ImageImage

THREAD: The Bible’s most gory story

It’s the disturbing account of the rape & dissection of the Levite’s concubine (Judges 19-21)

With lessons about male violence against women #vawg
The story is set during the time of the judges, when there’s little government.

The 1st & last verses remind us that there was no king (Judges 19:1; 21:25), which has already become a motif (17:6; 18:1)

It’s at the climactic point of the Bible’s goriest book.
Other Bible books relate more deaths, but Judges, with Adoni-bezek’s thumbs/big toes cut off, Eglon’s belly stabbed, Sisera’s temple pierced, Abimelech’s skull crushed, Samson’s eyes gouged out, & the concubine dissected depicts more body damage than the whole rest of the Bible.

DFID has long supported DID research - starting long before DFID was DFID.

If you like your research methods ‘old skool’ head back to 2001 (SocSci&Med) for ODA-funded research on Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) in urban India in '90s.... bit.ly/2wGKCj2 2/14
....ancient history but focused on a pressing need to evaluate <quality> & <effectiveness> of DID services (e.g. compare goals of service users with those of providers; & whether goals were met).

In 2019... Quality/Measurement/Effectiveness are still pressing questions...

So the @cpsuk are allowing teen girls & women to be sexually tortured on film. I have evidenced this horror on my blog. Proving much is non-consensual/ DV victims/performers who suffer mental health issues/physical harm to breasts /anus/genitalia etc bbc.co.uk/news/technolog… #VAWG
Also, a significant audience of online violent pornography are children and teenagers. #Pornhub hosts thousands of sexually violent videos that have millions of views. Many of these videos are 'home-made' and single males upload their own sexual offences against girls & women

Can we talk about this @DerSPIEGEL lying reporter story and how it shows the sort of imperial, racialised group think many of us have been flagging up for a LONG time.

It isn't just that a reporter LIED but that the organisation and culture ENABLED it.
So let's start with that Relotius won LOADS of journalistic awards including "the German Reporter Prize on FOUR different occasions, the Peter Scholl Latour Prize and the Konrad-Duden, the Kindernothilfe and the Catholic and Coburger media awards"
It continues: "He was named CNN "Journalist of the Year," he was honored with the Reemtsma Liberty Award, the European Press Prize and he even landed on the Forbes magazine list of the "30 under 30 - Europe: Media."

Been checking out the manosphere and incels. After wading through a quagmire of d**k pics can report back that there is a large, misogynistic subculture that needs to be dealt with as a public health crisis. It is porn sick. *Content Warning for this Thread*
According to this TIM reverse rape (a.k.a sexual rejection by a women/girl) is worse than real rape and should be included in #MeToo
There appears to be some crossover between incel (involuntary celibate) - trans. - anime and MRAs. I present Svetlana who looks forward to a violent rape and maiming of a woman
