*THREAD* (1/n) Often feminists don't agree to the fact that men in India suffer due to gender biased laws- in favor of women. Argument is, there are no statistics which suggest that Indian men suffer. So there is no need for gender neutral laws or a national commission for men.
(2/n)Well the statistics were always there but mostly ignored. I've collated some stats from NCRB data for Crime in India 2019. Despite these facts, people still play the 'women victim', 'abla nari' card. Let us look at what the statistics say -
(3/n) Analysis and approach - 1. For simplicity, the focus of this analysis will only be on crime against women. 2. Crimes like IPC 506 (Criminal intimidation), IPC 354C (Voyeurism), IPC 354D (Stalking), IPC 406 (Criminal breach of trust) have been left out in this analysis-
(4/n) for sake of simplicity, as for these cases, accused could be either male or female. Although a vast majority of these cases are filed mostly by women against men. 3. Number of FIR's lodged under different IPC sections for year 2019 are considered.
(4/n) for sake of simplicity, as for these cases, accused could be either male or female. Although a vast majority of these cases are filed mostly by women against men. 3. Number of FIR's lodged under different IPC sections for year 2019 are considered.
(5/n)4. Conviction rates from courts for the year 2019 are taken for each sectionand assumed as a ballpark figure for the estimation. Aim is to understand theoverall picture of gender biased laws, often used as weapons against men.
(6/n) 5. Based on the no. of FIR's and the conviction rate, the number of acquittals are calculated.
(7/n) 6. Argument might arise, just because a case does not lead to conviction in court, doesn't mean the case was false - valid point, agreed, but then just look at the numbers, all show the same disturbing trend, not even 1 outlier from the samples considered.
(8/n) 7. The analysis only shows how many FIR's were false, actual number of innocents, victims would be several times the number mentioned under each category.
(9/n) 8. Dowry Prohibition act is considered, as it is among the most abused act by women and their families, rarely are cases taken up against the alleged dowry giver.
(10/n) 9. There might be minute deviations in numbers here and there due to rounding off and interpolation. 10. No data fudging has been done, all data readily available on the internet.
(11/n) 1. IPC 304B - 7115 FIR's registered, 35.6% conviction rate --> no. of FIR's resulting in acquittals 4582   2.  Outraging modesty of a woman (all sections with IPC 354x) - 88367 FIR's registered, 26.9% conviction rate --> no. of FIR's resulting in acquittals 64596.
(12/n) 3.  IPC 376 - 32033 FIR's registered, 27.8% conviction rate --> no. of FIR's resulting in acquittals 23128.  4. Attempt to rape IPC 376/511 - 3944 FIR's registered, 28.9% conviction rate -->  no. of FIR's resulting in acquittals 2804
(13/n) 5.  IPC 377 - 1004 FIR's registered, 38.5% conviction rate --> no. of FIR's resulting in acquittals 617  6.  IPC 509 - 6939 FIR's registered, 21.8% conviction rate --> no. of FIR's resulting in acquittals 5426
(14/n) 7.  Dowry Prohibition Act - 13297 FIR's registered, 21.5% conviction rate --> no. of FIR's resulting in acquittals 10438  8.  DV Act - 553 FIR's registered, 21.9% conviction rate --> no. of FIR's resulting in acquittals 432
(15/n) 9.  Women centric cyber crimes - 1621 FIR's registered, 26.7% conviction rate --> no. of FIR's resulting in acquittals 1188  10.  Indecent representation of women - 23 FIR's registered, 31.8% conviction rate --> no. of FIR's resulting in acquittals 16.
(16/n) 11. The favorite, IPC 498A - 125298 FIR's registered, 14.6% conviction rate --> no. of FIR's resulting in acquittals 107004. Now some *Observations*:-
(17/n) 1. In 2019 51,56,172 FIR's were registered showing a growth of ~1.6% compared to 2018 (50,74,635 FIR's). 2. 4,05,861 FIR's registered for Crime against women in 2019 showing a growth of ~7.3% compared to 2018 (3,78,236 FIR's)
(18/n) 3. Majority of cases for crime against women were registered under sections IPC 498A (30.9%), Outraging modesty of women IPC 354x (21.8%), IPC 376 (7.9%), so a total of 60.6% registered FIR's for Crime against women
(19/n) 4. Conviction rates for most crimes are below 30% (range 14.6-38.5%) i.e. 2/3 of cases do not result in conviction, as they are either false, no evidence, no proof beyond reasonable doubts for conviction.
(20/n) 5. Conviction rate is lowest for IPC 498A at 14.6% and highest for IPC 377 at 38.5%, average conviction rate for crime against women at 22.8%.  6. In 90% of the cases Police files a chargesheet, a bulk of them without any proper investigation
(21/n) 7. More than 90% of the registered FIR's are pending trials. 8. Suicide rates in 2019 (1,39,123 suicides) increased by 3.42% compared to 1,34,516 suicides in 2018. 9. 66.7% out of the suicide victims were married and 23.6% unmarried.
(22/n) 10. 68.4% of male victims were married compared to 62.5% female victims. 11. 5.5% suicides in 2019 were attributed to marriage problems (7652 suicides). Marriage problems are bad dowry related issues, divorce, extra marital affairs, bad marriage etc.
(23/n) 12. Suicides due to dowry (25.75%), Divorce (7.1%), Bad marriage (30.69%), Extra marital affair (14.66%) , 21.8% due to other marriage problems. 13.  Suicides resulting due to dowry, divorce alone 2514 cases
(24/n) 14. Male to female suicide victims ratio is 70.2 : 29.8. Which means it can be estimated that 5371 men committed suicide due to matrimonial problems compared to 2281 women. 2.35 times more men compared to women died due to matrimonial problems.
(25/n) 15. Male to female suicide victims ratio increased from 68.5 : 31.5 in 2018 to 70.2 : 29.8 in 2019.   Would be open to feedback on this small analysis and eager to know what feminists and men haters have to say on this. Thank you.
