Today is World Mental Health day.

Mental illness is one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century & access to treatment should be universal.

People in our community should be able to get mental health treatment in the same way they would for a broken leg or flu.

#WMHD2020
Social service policies that push people into poverty cause stress and anxiety and part of looking after mental health in this country is ensuring that we keep people out of poverty and look after their wellbeing.
We are calling on the Government to urgently release the final Productivity Commission report into Mental Health and the final report of the MBS Taskforce’s recommendations regarding Medicare-funded mental health care items.
It is important that any recommendations, for long-term, systemic change, and the Government’s response to these recommendations, be made public and reforms implemented.

It is unclear why the Minister is not releasing these reports.

The Government has today introduced legislation that will make the #CashlessDebitCard permanent in the current trial sites and introduce it to the Northern Territory and Cape York.

This is a toxic piece of legislation. This card is denying people their dignity & quality of life
The Minister needs to come clean about whether the pause on new #Jobseeker recipients being placed on the Cashless Debit Card will continue or not.

It is highly likely that people newly on income support will now be put on the card.
Just because people are without employment it does not mean that they cannot manage their finances. It is insulting and paternalistic.

This Government has an agenda and it is stigmatising and demeaning people who need to access the social safety net.

Solidarity to people marching across the US in support of George Floyd & #BlackLivesMatter.

In no just society would it take this to hold police accountable. We are right to be outraged.

We must also channel that fury & grief at similar injustices happening every day at home.
At least 432 First Nations people have died in custody since the 1991 Royal Commission into Deaths in Custody.

Not 1 police officer has been convicted.

Nearly thirty years later, we’re still calling for: decriminalisation of minor offences like fine default, making prison a last resort, funding for culturally sensitive health & mental health services & implementation of audits to track gov progress.

The Community Affairs References Committee releases their report into the Adequacy of #Newstart today.

The senate referred this in July last year and heard evidence from from well respected institutions and think tanks & most importantly income support recipients themselves.
The report has now been tabled and the committee has recommended an increase to the #JobSeeker Payment, #YouthAllowance and Parenting Payment rates to ensure people do not live in poverty.

You can read it here: bit.ly/3bP3xuF
Thank you to all the community members who gave evidence at the inquiry.

For having the courage to come forward and share your experiences with us.

I've just moved the Greens second reading amendment in in the Senate.

The Government’s response to #COVID19 continues to see large sections of our population left behind.

👇
The Greens sought to amend the #JobKeeper package to provide proper support to at least the following groups -

#COVID19

👇
1. Disability Support Pension recipients, carers, and age pensioners who receive Commonwealth Rent Assistance, none of whom will be eligible for the $550 a fortnight COVID-19 supplement and will be trapped beneath the poverty line

Today I will be seeking the support of the senate to
extend the $550 stimulus supplement to Carers and people on #DSP, to extend the Jobseeker Payment to people on temporary visas and ensure that part-time workers can’t be exploited.

#COVID19 #wagesubsidyforall
I will also try to amend the #Jobkeeper package to ensure that not-for-profits will survive this crisis.

At the moment charities need to demonstrate a 15% decline in revenue to be eligible for the Jobkeeper Payment.

#COVID19 #wagesubsidyforall
While this helps some charities, those that rely largely on government grants won’t be able to demonstrate the 15% decline in revenue if tied grants are included.

Hi everyone

Another update from me on #Centrelink and employment service providers.

#COVID19Pandemic

👇
I know that it’s been a very stressful time for you all and I want to reassure people that my team and I are working to help fix system errors & raising issues with the Minister and Government as they arise as much as we can.

👇
As you may know, income reporting has been suspended until Friday 3rd April meaning that people that were due to report their income THIS WEEK don't have to and will be paid automatically.
