The bench had earlier sought a response from the Secretary of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

Senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for the editor-in-chief of @republic had said Goswami had not interfered with the proceedings or working of the House.

Senior Adv Harish Salve: there is a office report. it says no appearance has been entered. we tried to serve the plea, but it could not be done

CJI: file an affidavit then

Salve: We will do that

SG Tushar Mehta: I appear for the Union of India

CJI: But Centre is not a party

Salve: We served the Union of India

CJI: Has the privileges committee taken note of this show cause notice. That is the law understood by us and not a letter by the speaker

Senior Adv Abhishek Manu Singhvi: the complaint is made to the speaker and then this complaint is served upon the privileges committee

CJI: In the house when one member alleges statement against another member then the speaker takes note of it and forwards it to the privileges committee. My father, Arvind Bobde and Late Mr Nani Palkhiwala was served such a notice by the Maharashtra assembly.

Salve: Refusal to accept notice worries me. I hope they don't take a confrontational position

CJI: that's okay you have come here due to anxiety but we need to adhere to the law in this case. You know better..
