Erica was the highest elevation point above sea level on the line. It was a steady climb from Moe to Erica.

Unfortunately for Walhalla and the railway, the major gold mine closed in 1914 and there was a slow decline from that point. It remained a popular tourist destination.

Locomotive is NA 2-6-2 1A. This locomotive was built by Baldwin USA 1898 together with 2A. The rest of the NAs 3A to 17A were built at Newport VR 1900 to 1915.
2A & 4A were compound.

The station building seen in this photograph was moved to Hartwell in December 1938. The decline in passenger and freight traffic was such that closure was imminent, in fact closed 1944.

This is two years after the station building had been moved to Hartwell. Standard VR shelter shed in place.
Late 1920s VR obtained 2 narrow gauge Garratt locomotives G class 2-6-0+0-6-2.
G41 was used on the Beech Forest - Crowes line.
G42 was allocated to the Walhalla line.
Lady hanging off G42 is my Nanna.
My Grandpa & Nanna spent their honeymoon at Walhalla.

The D2 (5' 3" gauge loco) is on the dual gauge turntable at Moe. The narrow gauge locomotives were reversed from time to time to even out wheel wear.

Gellibrand was an intermediate station on the Colac - Beech Forest - Crowes VR 2' 6" railway. Open 1902 closed 1962. Gellibrand was named after Joseph Gellibrand who disappeared between Geelong and Colac in 1837 while exploring. members.optusnet.com.au/~narrow.gauge/…

Daylesford is located in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range NW of Melbourne. It was served by 2 branch lines.
From Carlsruhe on the Bendigo line open 1880.
From North Creswick on the Ballarat - Maryborough line open 1887.

Both branch lines entered Daylesford from the same end.
To run from North Creswick to Carlsruhe it was necessary to enter Daylesford and reverse. Most Daylesford services were via Woodend (Carlsruhe).
