Just getting started on this mornings #WSPFEvents Online Conference titled:

The future for social security in England - Universal Credit, supporting vulnerable groups, and the impact of COVID-19.

I'll be giving a presentation on claiming #UniversalCredit as a disabled person.
2/ First up is Dr Kate Summers of the LSE.

She's giving a talk in Key and Emerging Issues for Social Security in England.

LSE have been questioning claimants from across the UK & have established a commission investigating what can make the welfare system better. #WSPFEvents
3/ Dr Kate Summers of LSE now outlining differences between previous claimants and COVID-19 claimants.

Key points.

• Younger
• More ethnically diverse
• More Uni Graduates
• 1 size fits all not working

#WSPFEvents
4/ Summers now talking about support networks both formal and informal.

During COVID-19 these have come under considerable strain.

Many 3rd sector and grassroots orgs now worried about their future going forward.

#WSPFEvents
5/ Dr Kate Andrews of LSE tells #WSPFEvents that support for 3rd sector organisations needs to further.

Many orgs are now struggling and this is filtering down to claimants.
7/ @NRPFNetwork giving presentation to #WSPFeventd on those affected by No Recourse to Public Funds.

66 Councils provide Accommodation and Support to 2450 households at their cost.

27% of non-EEA households UK wide have been supported for 1000+ days.
8/ @NRPFNetwork says legal aid needs to be reinstated to those put into NRPF so they can challenge status.

Highlights how post brexit immigration rules are going to put more people on this group.

Pre-settled status for EU residents doesn't mean benefit entitlement

#WSPFevents
9/ #WSPFevents

Despite COVID-19, Home Office has not given those with No Recourse to Public Funds any exemptions.

@NRPFNetwork says big changes required to lift people with NRPF put of poverty and rough sleeping.
10/ Next up for #WSPFevents, Angela Harrington if Manchester City Council.

37% of residents in Manchester earn below living wage.

COVID-19 has increased strain on already struggling residents.
11/ "Disproportionate impact" on homeless people in Manchester says Angela Harrington.

Largest request for help has been for food in Manchester, as it has been nationally.

#WSPFevents
14/ Really glad @VoiceBritannia joined to watch today's #WSPFevents today.

Raises important point on means testing and UBI
15/ Another common theme among benefit claimants: shame. #WSPFevents
16/ A VERY important question on sex workers and #UniversalCredit during today's #WSPFevents.

It is recognised by MPs of all parties this is an issue.

I wrote about this last year. 👇 universalcreditsuffer.com/2019/03/20/mps…
17/ Support for Domestic Abuse victims comes up.

The DWP need to change the conditions they place on victims.

Eg: Only allowed help ONCE A YEAR

#WSPFevents universalcreditsuffer.com/2019/01/10/pro…
18/ Pre COVID-19 an IFS Report said that Poorest 10% Will Be Worst Hit by Universal Credit.

This was pre COVID-19, how has this panned out now.

#WSPFevents
universalcreditsuffer.com/2019/04/24/ifs…
19/ I asked #WSPFevents why people under 25 are deemed less valuable?

Why do they get less money? There's no special under 25 only food and utility bill rates.

#UniversalCredit should pay a Universal amount.
20/. Brendan Sarsfield of @PeabodyLDN tells #WSPFevents:

"#UniversalCredit is a slow death"

Says Universal Credit's philosophy is to drive people back to work. Doesn't work for anyone unless only short term.
21/ @AnneMcLaughlin Chairing #WSPFevents that when people are classed as "workshy" it "boils her blood."

I can personally attest this is a major issue in the jobcentres are the DWP.
20/ SNP Anne McLaughlin is the perfect person to chair #WSPFevents. She has personal experience of the welfare system and understands the big challenges claimants face.
22/ Ian Porter of @jrf_uk now raises important point that many people in poverty are working.

Cites IFS report highlighting families get less financial support in 2020 than they did in 2011.
23/ Ian Porter if @jrf_uk says evidence from disabled people during the Pandemic "has been dejecting".

Goes onto say how £20 uplift has made a massive difference.

16 million people will loss £1000 per year overnight if uplift removed.
24/ Ian Porter highlights that there is cross party support to keep the £20 uplift and urges Government to "do the right thing."

Very valuable contribution from @jrf_uk.

#WSPFevents
25/ Next up: Ryan Shorthouse from @WeAreBrightBlue think tank.

He starts by saying that Politically it makes sense for Conservative Government to keep uplift.

Eg: Northern voters they won over will be relying on this. #WSPFevents
26/ Shorthouse states Bright Blue conducted 40 semi structured interviews with Claimants.

Highlights ID verification came up as an issue for many different types of people.

Older people struggled with online system Vs younger positive.

5 week wait bog issue
#WSPFevents
27/ 1/3 of those interviewed by Bright Blue didn't receive their 1st payment at 5 week date.

Says mixed results with monthly payment system and some needed external help.

Big issue was rent payment direct to Claimant, most prefer Direct to Landlord.
#WSPFevents
28/ Important information on the link between Universal Credit and Survival Sex. #WSPFevents
29/ Peabody representative explains perception of Universal Credit perfectly.

#WSPFevents
30/ Bright Blue's rep say overwhelming positive response from Disabled Claimants in their 40 person interviews.

This is definitely not representative IMHO.

In all honesty this sounds like complete bullshit.

Trump will never go willingly and I can't see SDNY prosecutors accepting this either.

This is the danger of Social Media, blue ticks can post this with zero evidence and then just ignore it.
2/ There we go...

1) Cooper only cited a Facebook based news org in original post. Now it's "sources."
2) I don't see a journo revealing a source, especially if it's Stephen Miller.
3) With 610k followers it's really irresponsible to spread unverified reports like this.
3/ Also, on #WorldMentalHealthDay of all days, Cooper is spreading more anon source info from Google psychiatrists who've diagnosed Trump as Bipolar.

It's irresponsible, dangerous & unfair to people who are Bipolar.

This type of thing harms #BidenHarris2020 more than it helps.

Seems @BorisJohnson and the @Conservatives didn't want this picture of him with ex Express owner turned property developer Richard Desmond going around.

There's more than one to be fair....

Shame that......
Also seems relevant that Boris Johnson has had numerous dealings with Thorncliffe, the firm used by Phillip Desmond for the Tower Hamlets scheme.

They even wrote an article when he was running for Tory leader, complete with a with dream cabinet....

3 years on and their families still don't have the full story, nor has anyone been held responsible for the death of their loved ones.

It's time for #JusticeForGrenfell 💚

If only you're just discovering that Universal Credit is punitive & uncaring, here's one day of the numerous reports by @TrussellTrust highlighting why.
universalcreditsuffer.com/2019/11/05/new…
Foodbanks in full Universal Credit areas see 52% increase in use and are feeling the strain.

And another report showing how Universal Credit is fuelling #foodbank use.

If you're young enough not to know why Piers Morgan shouldn't be allowed a platform, I'll explain.

On May 1st 2004, Piers Morgan as Editor of the Daily Mirror, ran this front page.

The photos are fakes, but he ran it without checking & put British Soldiers lives at risk.
2/ During the Leveson Inquiry into phone hacking, Jeremy Paxman said that Morgan told him how phones were hacked. See article

Morgan had denied it, but the report said he was lying.

The Trinity Mirror Group eventually admitted phone hacking did occur.

theguardian.com/media/2012/may…
3/ More recently, Morgan put on a "Chinese accent" on live TV.

He proceeded to them defend his racist trope again Chinese people. Again, @GMB did nothing.
