IS made the claim on 15 October in the name of its so-called Central Africa Province branch, which was declared in April 2019 and includes Mozambique and DR Congo
IS said its militants attacked a Tanzanian army barracks on 14 October in the village of Kitaya in Mtwara Region, prompting clashes with security forces that resulted in "the death or injury of a number of [Tanzanian soldiers]".
Mtwara Region, in Tanzania's far south-east, overlooks the Indian Ocean to the east and borders Mozambique to the south. It is close to Mozambique's northern province of Cabo Delgado, particularly the port town of Mocimboa da Praia which IS has repeatedly raided this year
In early September, IS said it killed or wounded a number of Tanzanian and Mozambican soldiers in clashes in Mocimboa da Praia
It published an infographic on 1 Oct to flaunt the activities of its "Central Africa Province". The graphic featured Tanzania along with Mozambique and DRC on a map, in a possible signal back then that it had plans to include Tanzania in the remit of its Central Africa branch.
