Welcome all, we are LIVE and @Kit_Yates_Maths is talking us through the week’s figures. Spoiler alert: it’s not looking good
Trends in Test, Trace & Isolate: fewer than 45% of potential contacts are being reached. We need to provide better support for people to isolate
Daily cases edging up towards 20,000
Northern Ireland is seeing significant rises per head of population
Increases are not because we're testing more people. It's because there are more infections
Cases still rising fastest in north west, north east and Northern Ireland
Number of new confirmed COVID-19 cases. Cases rising in all regions
Cases are increasing in every demographic
Hospitalisations doubling roughly every 2 weeks
Hospital admissions are increasing in all regions
Increases in deaths are locked in for at least the next month. These figures are only going to get worse
The message from the data is we need to act now and we need to act decisively to bring down cases
@chrischirp presents Independent SAGE's 6 week emergency plan
After that circuit breaker ends, we still need some restrictions so that schools can open
What we do not want is to end up in this repeating cycle of lockdowns. We think it will take 6 weeks to build the public health scaffolding needed
@GabrielScally presents Independent SAGE's blueprint for reform of the Find, Test, Trace & Isolate system
Independent SAGE is calling for a national Covid-testing consortium under the oversight and management of the NHS
Enough is enough. Fighting this virus without a properly functioning FTTIS is like fighting a battle with one hand tied behind our back @GabrielScally
@Sir_David_King There is a false dichotomy between the economy and the health of the nation. As a result of delays going into lockdown in March we have seen the worst impact on the economy and the worst level of deaths in Europe. We got hit both ways. Haven't we learned?
It's a wrap! Thank you for joining us. Same time next week.

We agree the "It is highly likely that there will be significant outbreaks associated with HE" and agree on strategies to mitigate risk.
However, our recommendation about the purpose, extent and duration of our online teaching and learning strategy will maximise the effectiveness of other strategies such as residential segments and testing/tracing.
In sum: maximising remote learning at the start of term will enable subsequent pivots to in-person depending on infection rates, rather than away from it if there are cases.
