This god damn Two Pizza rule. Let me tell you a story about it. In 2013 I was raising funds for my startup . I meet an associate at top VC firm. A freshly minted MBA + consulting guy.who was armed to teeth with every startup clichés. Nice person otherwise. Contd.
I gave very conservative hiring plan of 7 people in a year . 2 backend , 2 front-end , 1 data, 1 QA ,1 Content and CS. He said that's too much ! Why not two pizza team. I liked the guy so I said " that rule is for team not company". Contd.
He insisted: " No ! This plan is very aggressive. How many pizza you need for it . " I said : " Unless we are drunk two pizza will be more than enough". He said : Really? Two Pizza for 7 PPL"
Then it hit me . There was a massive disconnect. This guy has never been to USA . Where pizza is bigger by default . So in Amz lingo 2 pizza mean 6 ppl safely. More if you have chicago style casserole pizza . Our VC guy assumed it's desi dominos pizza medium
I showed him clip of breaking bad to explain the size of pizza. He was embarrassed at first laughed later . Went out for coffee with me after meeting. In followed up for 3 week but He went radio silent . Finally I run into him at TiE Delhi. He bought me coffee again
I asked for feedback . he said you need to rework your distribution and go to market plan . This OEM partnership is not for you (we had letter of intent from 2 OEM). I asked why ? He said : You are startup you should do things that don't scale , like Airbnb. I excused myself
Every rule of thumb is based in a context . Airdropping American metaphor is counter productive.

Thanks for your feedback on my thread about NBU. I learned a lot. After much procrastination I am finally doing a follow up. Here are few more of notes from my @NotionHQ notebook.Original thread is here 👇for Ref and Continuity: 1/n
Picking up where we left last time ie: #dukaantech . The biggest business goal of shopkeepers is to get a bigger share of grocery bulk shopping done at Wholesale market at the start of the month. Explained 👇2/n
A family buys 15KG of rice per month. They buy 10KG in the start of the month from the wholesale market and then keep replenishing it 1KG at a time (on credit) from neighbourhood shop. Credit is paid next month after payday and before a trip to wholesale market. 3/n

A thread on observations about the behavior of Next Billion Users (NBU) and how they use products and services we build: 1/n
I have spent the last few months in Bikaner, A tier 2 city in Rajasthan. Here I got to observe our users from a distance while still being part of context. Some of what I noticed was contrary to the ideas we have in the industry about our users.2/n
I am writing this thread to (1) Validate: is it just me and my sampling bias or others also observe the same patterns? (2) As we build products for the next billion users ( NBU) these observations might help us build a more representative persona for our users. 3/n

Logic is usually the best way to succeed in an argument, but if you want to succeed in life it is not necessarily all that useful.3/n

Just Finished reading "Debt: The First 5000 Year " by David Graeber. It's a fascinating book that deconstructs the concept of Debt and shows how it permeates everything from geopolitics to economics to religion to everyday morality. amazon.in/Debt-Updated-E…
if there is one thing which more shocking than the omnipresence of the idea of debt it is our ignorance (and denial) of it. This book does a good job of getting rid of the ignorance part. we can still choose to live in denial and do nothing.
This is not an easy book. Not a book that can be read over a weekend. This is a book that requires you to highlight text, write in the margins. So here is a thread on key learnings I had from this book.

Happy Mother's Day. Today I want to share a little personal anecdote. I wanted to do it for long, but I stopped myself because I was lazy, it was weird, and the conclusion I wanted to present was not statistically verified.
A few years back, I was at my college reunion. It was a decade and a half for me since I left college, and some of the attendees were out of college for a little more than two decades. Some had kids going to college already.
It was well past midnight, after the third bottle of beer we were contemplating big questions of life. Nostalgia and alcohol made us a philosopher. Just like college days.
