In conversation with @gvravishankar at @techinasia, @BYJUS co-founder, Divya talks about their journey of disruption, challenges, successes & more.
The co. that we’ve built today is driven by #passion. We made things happen no matter the challenges. We wanted to make learning accessible, effective, engaging, and personalised. We use tech to do that for 70M kids today.
Never been afraid to positively disrupt ourselves. Prior to our app launch in 2015 - we were a 100% offline service, running classrooms as big as stadiums. Today we are a 100% online product company.
India has the largest school-going population with 260M enrolments but rank low in major global assessments as personalisation is hard & learning is driven by the fear of exams, not by the ♥️ for learning. Launched the app to change this at scale. In <45 days, we had 2M users.
The pandemic took millions of kids out of school & away from scheduled engagement. We decided to make our app free, starting live classes to ensure that learning does not stop. We also fast-tracked many releases - launching the app in multiple languages with more subjects.
We have the ability to move fast, as both the core team that’s been constant since inception as well as people at every level are unified by the singular mission to build more products to reach more students across grades and geographies. That’s made a huge difference.
Behind every success, there are 9 failures. But those failures are key as they lead to that 1 big win. Entrepreneurship means having your best foot forward at all times. Adopt a ‘never say no' attitude which comes when you don’t define your passion, but your passion defines you.
We are in the news today but a decade of effort has gone into it. Stories that drive us: Students who can’t attend school continue learning bcos of BYJU’S. When parents tell us that if they had a platform like ours, their lives could have been different.
Advice to early-stage founders: Never start up for the sake of it but because you really want to make an impact. Ensure diversity in the team for a better approach to #problemsolving. Celebrate intrapreneurship-give responsibilities, trust people to make mistakes & never give up.

In his masterclass about crafting an effective pitch deck @YourStoryCo’s #TechSparks2020, @P_Kemps highlights some aspects that seem trivial but are important, some that are easy to miss, and some that mustn’t be missed. A 🧵- Image
1/ The title is as important as anything else in your deck. It should define your company in a single declarative sentence and can also be about your #mission & #vision.
2/ Tell a #story to explain your #purpose, tying your idea to a broader shift taking place in the world. Your company’s reason to be should be based on unique market/consumer insights driven by one or many of these changes 👇 Image
