Since time immemorial, Land of Madhyapradesh is ruled by almost all major Empires that ruled India significantly, in comparison to other Indian States. List include Maurya, Gupta, Satvahana, Rashtrakuta, Chalukya, Gujar-Pratihar, Pala, Sultanats, Mughals, Marathas and English.

Land of Madhyapradesh was the Royal house of Kingdoms of Kalchuris, Parmars, Chandel, Baghels, Bundels, Tomars, Parihars and Gonds.

After India's independence, Madhya Pradesh state was created in 1950 with Nagpur as its capital, from the former British Central Provinces and Berar Agency.

North-western portion of current Madhya Pradesh was then a seprate state called as Madhya Bharat, also known as Malwa Union, created on 28 May 1948 from 25 princely states, with Gwalior as winter capital and Indore as summer capital.

North-Eastern portion of current Madhyapradesh was created in 1948, formally in 25 January 1950, as Vindhya Pradesh by amalgation of princely states of Baghelkhand and Bundelkhand, with Rewa as its capital.

In Nov 1, 1956 after States Reorganisation Act, states of Madhya Bharat, Vindhya Pradesh, and Bhopal were merged into Madhya Pradesh, and Marathi-speaking southern region Vidarbha, which included Nagpur, was ceded to Bombay state. Nov 1, 2000 Chattisgarh state carved out of it.
