Once upon a time a group of citizens and merchants were happily trading in one of the the world's three biggest medieval walked cities ..
it had expanded to its present size owing to the unimpeded trade & freedoms inside ..
To make things easier and fairer for all they all agreed to one shared authority to determine the rules and set taxes for those outsiders who wanted to trade with those inside . Four of the smaller groups inside were happy with the rules of trade but wanted to set their own taxes
for others including those inside.. they had four seperate mini zones. They did however join most of those inside in not asking for ID for people to go about their daily business. One day this group of citizens were persuaded by some new would be leaders that they would be
better off outside the huge city as they would be able to offer the same levels of trade as those remaining inside but would also get them more business from the rest of the world out there ...because they were special and anyone supporting them was too. The people were persuaded
in the majority but particularly not in groups legally made to be part of the majority .and some had a very special intermixed relationship with some to be left inside the city. Complicated.
This "special" group are now sat outside the city where many of the leaders were
in favour of building no wall around them, expecting others out there can be persuaded to open their gates to their traders in return through this unilateral generosity to them. The other walled cities are rubbing their hands at the prospect & opportunities for *their* merchants.
They've no intention of being charitable to the "special" ones. Why should they be? They're not persuaded by any claim that they are "special"..but instead are now sitting vulnerable & desperate for trade into their cities .In the meantime the former walled city they were part of
has agreed to keeping their gates fully open until a new arrangement on trade can be met .. in further meantime a plague descended on the world impacting on their abilities to trade or make new arrangements . Never mind .. we could extend the open gates period to give more time.
The new leaders of the outside group however declined it. They wanted their gates closed by the end of the year even though they knew there would not be enough trained personnel to process and monitor the goods now coming from the big city ..no problem they said "we can offer to
let your goods in with limited controls and no testing for six months ..that would also include goods legaly *transiting* through your big city from other "cities" ..would you do same?"
The big city was not so inclined to become a smugglers utopia so they declined.
The group outside were a little perturbed at this but knew they now had no choice but to unilaterally keep their gates opened as they depended rather a lot on the produce from the big city especially food and medicines ..and until they had the facilities and manpower now needed
to control the business it was the only option .. taking control without the ability to actually do so seemed a little contradictory to some but they were readily dismissed as traitors .This new group of leaders were determined to show the big city who's boss and despite their
self inflicted time limit they're now a few weeks from having the big city gates closed without the ability to handle the situation ..even if they can get that gate opened just a little in a last minute "deal" to build on. Their merchants are becoming more frantic by the prospect
of (at the most) a gate only slightly open for their (especially perishable) merchandise to squeeze and be processed through ..bad!
But still remain cowed by the fanatics leading a mass of still expectant people into a better sunny uplands future.
There is not a happy ending

"Perhaps we will get a last-minute deal. But even if we do, the prospect of coping, with so many retailers and wholesalers close to oblivion, is hard to imagine. And if we don’t it will be far worse. Yet the government is clear on only one thing: regardless of the plague on all
we are leaving on 31 December. And it has basically opened the borders until July and given food companies up to 21 months to change labels. So their argument is: not only have you had time to prepare, we are giving you even more time after January. Big deal!
Many businesses simply have not had the time or focus to prepare, notwithstanding the late, partial and confusing guidance from government in recent days. It doesn’t actually matter whose fault that is (though the government is getting its excuses in early).

Joan McAlpine, convener of Holyrood’s Europe Committee, asked him if the haulage industry is prepared for this outcome. Mr McKenzie (RHA) said: “Absolutely not, this is a shambles. It’s been a shambles from beginning to end.
“The information we have is incomplete, inadequate
and quite often totally incomprehensible.
“We feel we have been badly let down by the UK Government from beginning to end.”
ECMT permits, he said, demand for which far outstrips supply. There are only about 4,000 of these permits despite more than 40,000 being required, he said,
and it is not possible to print more as the UK is only allocated a certain amount. Mr McKenzie added: “This is where we are now, the current default position is that we are effectively stopping the best part of 90% of companies from trading with Europe. It’s bonkers.”

Somebody just mentioned to me why is UK opposition/media not highlighting that UK "Light Touch" policy on imports from EU i.e. no customs declarations and no SPS measures for 6 months

is that euphemism for *smugglers charter*?

Anybody?
It is not demonstrating for example 3rd countries could ship box to Rotterdam where now wouldn't be customs cleared/SPS checked for UK but trans-shipped (TIR) for onward delivery thru Dover ..no full decs/no SPS checks. Covid 21 laced bat, but chicken labelled meat.. no worries
& this is why @CliveWismayer EU won't reciprocate UK "Light Touch" ...which infuriated so many rabid brexiters at the time announced back in June (rather than UK take extended transition)
..& as per last twitter exchange with you why UK heading for halted production/empty shelves

Read it and weep...absorb what it says on the length of time cargo backrd up..then try to imagine UK does not have the capacity by 50,000 staff/IT & space/infrastructure
AND a "Light Touch" Smugglers charter no customs declarations NOR SPS measures

The Australia Experience 2005
“What’s happening in the UK reflects this, with insufficient time for testing and training and, if the parallels continue, you’ll end up with cargo backed up on wharves for months.”
The Gov picked “probably the worst possible time… right in the peak season” to make the switch,
resulting in hundreds of thousands of sea and air freight consignments stranded when ICS crashed, Mr Zalai said.
“The roll-out was disastrous for Australian trade. The government brought me in to advise on how to get cargo moving again,” he said. “I think the true

God help the UK..seriously. This dolt is a "trade representative"..& apparently does not grasp the basics that there's no external money coming in to the Treasury from tarriffs loaded onto imported goods.
It's a tax paid by the consumer designed as a deterent to buying the goods
UK has so many dolts in power. As for "recalibrating trade" unless it's to form another customs union with another 500m rich consumers (on doorstep) u can "recalibate" to kingdom bloody come it won't compensate (NTB) costs.. esp when the CU also a single regulated internal market
Seriously how the hell *did* UK end up with such ignorant, deluded, crooked twats in Gov?
It's painful to see..
4 years of the same repeated bollox and groundhog day, dearth of understanding.
Is it deliberate? To satisfy an unthinking base?
I'm not sure what's worse.

"Sam Blakeman, a sales manager at Rosslyn, said businesses have been putting off implementing Brexit solutions because they have been waiting for the outcome of the trade talks, not realizing paperwork will be required regardless. “That penny seems to be dropping,” said Blakeman
...who described the silence on the other end of the phone this week when he told a major company that he wouldn’t beable to take on their work. “There was a ‘Have we left this too late?’ realization.”
Capacity for logistics companies is so limited that several of the world’s biggest firms are turning down Brexit work because they are sold out. A.P. Moller-Maersk, the Danish shipping giant, is rejecting potential clients while Kuehne + Nagel International AG,
