Another day, another record-bad #COVID19 report in Minnesota. 5,924 newly reported cases, just three days after MN first crossed *4,000*:
EVEN WORSE: Another day of 30+ #COVID19 deaths means Minnesota is officially seeing the most deadly phase of its outbreak. More deadly than May! The seven-day average death rate now is nearly 26/day. It peaked in May below 25/day.
Minnesota’s positivity rate is also continuing to rise, now up to a 7-day average of 13.9%. The all-time record here from May is 16.3%.
New #COVID19 hospital admissions also continue to set new records day after day:
Minnesota now has more than 30,000 active, confirmed #COVID19 cases for the first time — less than *1 week* after Minnesota first crossed the 20,000 active case threshold.
Minnesota's #COVID19 outbreak is in an exponential growth phase. At the current rate total cases will double in 26 days.

Put another way, it took us 8 months to get our first 180,000 confirmed cases. We’re now on track to get our second 180,000 in less than 1 month.
New #COVID19 deaths, meanwhile, are on track to double every 68 days. That means about 2,000 more deaths before Christmas at the current rate.
#COVID19 cases are spiking everywhere. Hennepin and Ramsey counties are currently averaging about 65 new cases per 100,000 residents per day. For context, that’s where northwestern MN was just over a week ago, when they had by far the worst outbreak in the state. (Now: 95/day.)
#COVID19 cases are at record highs in every age group in Minnesota, including people over 60, who are at greatest risk of dying or requiring hospitalization:
Though Minnesota’s testing volume remains high, this explosion in #COVID19 cases isn’t due to testing (as the simultaneous rise of deaths & hospitalizations should indictate). New cases are growing much faster than tests:
Here’s new #COVID19 cases in Minnesota by the date the sample was taken, rather than when it was reported to @mnhealth. Same explosive rise:
@mnhealth And here’s the sample-date graph without the incomplete data from the past week filtered. I’d expect more than 6,000 positive cases to come out of people who get tested tomorrow (Mondays usually have the most new cases as people go in to get their weekend symptoms checked out)
@mnhealth The number of hospital beds occupied by #COVID19 patients also continues to soar:

Minnesota is up to nearly 30,000 active #COVID19 cases, up from 13,000 two weeks ago.
The positivity rate and case count are both continuing to rise:
Another day of 30+ deaths, averaging 24/day over the last week:

STORY: In 2020, Hennepin County saw total votes equal to 90.4% of registered voters. That seems suspiciously high to some people. But turnout rates were just as high in GOP strongholds, too — even before accounting for MN’s same-day registration. mprnews.org/story/2020/11/… Image
Here’s the 2020 election in Minnesota in one chart — change in vote share vs. change in turnout. As you can see, turnout was up big in Trump counties as well as Biden counties. Hennepin’s not an outlier. mprnews.org/story/2020/11/… Image
For example: Hennepin County saw 90.4% of previously registered voters vote. But Wright County, where Trump won 61.9% of the vote, had 94.3% turnout by this measure. Sherburne County was Trump 65.1% with 92% turnout. Morrison County was Trump 75.8%, 93.5% turnout.

A month ago Minnesota had never reported more than 2,000 new #COVID19 cases in a day. Two weeks ago it had never reported more than 3,000. Yesterday it had never passed 4,000.

Today it reported 5,454.

BUT: This record-high number of cases was also based on record-high testing. Image
Here you can see how Minnesota’s testing volume has shot up. This explains SOME of the record rise in cases, but not ALL of it. The positivity rate is rising, too, despite high testing. ImageImage
Minnesota also set a new dismal record today in the number of newly reported #COVID19 deaths today: 36. It’s averaged 22 deaths/day over the past week. Image

Another record number of newly reported #COVID19 cases in Minnesota today — just under 4,000. The 7-day average is now 3,235 new cases/day, also a record.
SOME of this record increase is due to testing volume and when cases happen to be reported — the positivity rate declined day-over-day, and cases by sample date are peaking a little lower, at about 3,500. But the increase *is* real, even if testing explains a little of it.
#COVID19 ICU admissions hit a record high today in Minnesota, both for single days and for the 7-day trend:

1/ My latest for @MPRnews looks at the power & the limits of the DFL’s electoral dominance in the Twin Cities. First, the power: Biden’s landslide in Hennepin Cty ALONE was bigger than all Trump’s counties COMBINED. It’s no wonder Ds have a winning streak. mprnews.org/story/2020/11/…
@MPRnews 2/ But while no Republican has won a statewide race in MN since 2006, largely because of the mass of DFL votes out of Hennepin and Ramsey, this power has limits. Against the DFL winning streak in STATEWIDE elections, #mnleg control keeps flipping. mprnews.org/story/2020/11/…
@MPRnews 3/ In 2020, Biden is winning Minnesota by about 7 points. But at the present, it looks like the DFL is going to LOSE the #mnleg Senate. This could change as votes trickle in, but if the DFL wins it it’ll be NARROWLY, amid a giant Biden win. mprnews.org/story/2020/11/…

So the election’s not yet over — and neither is #COVID19. The latest stats in MN show the outbreak continuing to expand, including a record number of positive cases: 3,844.

The 7-day average is up over 3,000 newly reported cases per day.
Yesterday I said the freakishly high, 30% positivity rate was probably a fluke. Today’s data bears that out, but that’s the only good news — the average positivity rate is 12.3%, nearly 3 times higher than a month ago.
This was another day of more than 30 newly reported #COVID19 deaths. Minnesota’s average daily COVID deaths is now over 20/day.
